Central Montana Outfitters

A friend of mine wants to book a combo elk/mule deer hunt with Central Montana Outfitters. We attended the recent ISE and spoke with Chad Shearer (owner/guide), who seemed to be a pretty straight shooter (no pun intended). But before I lay out that kind of money, I would like to know if anybody has any experience, or knowledge, about his operation. Good, bad, or indifferent. All opinions appreciated.

P.S. Would have posted this under "General" category, but I have not been able to post under that and the "Elk" topics.

He also gives talks at the ISE shows and I believe he use to be the World Elk Calling Champion too. That's about all I know of him and have talked with him too, a real nice friendly person.

I believe CMO over-harvests game on their leased ranches. I would compare it to the overharvest that typically occurs on ranches enrolled in FWP's Block Management Program.

Why do i believe this and make this comparison? Almost a decade ago i began hunting mule deer bucks on public land adjacent to a particular ranch. The first several years of hunting were dynamite and i encountered no other hunters. then CMO leased the hunting rights on the ranch. By the third year of their lease, the quality of bucks i was seeing on the adjacent public land dropped from numerous mature bucks to zero mature bucks. Public land farther from the ranch leased by CMO continued to provide excellent hunting. Obviously, i no longer bother hunting the public land adjacent to the ranch leased by CMO.
