Could someone describe access, terrain, trail system, distance to pack in, and anything else a DIY elk hunter without horses would face if they had this tag. If it wasn't a 30 hour drive, I'd love to find out for myself, so thanks for any help.

I have only been in once many years ago and I was on horseback. To access good elk hunting you would need to pack in at least 5 to 10 miles and the year we went we packed in 10 or so and then hunted farther out than that. I just don't see how you could get an elk out before it spoiled on a backpack, unless you have a posse of very strong friends with nothing else to do.
There are main canyons and then small side canyons. Most with decent trails, etc. The ridge tops are not all that high, but again it appears to me to be horse country.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-04-10 AT 02:05PM (MST)[p]Its hard without houses
great unit though. There are two main access points. Lots of trails break off of those.

Thanks for the comments and the PMs sent. Looks like a packer is a neccessity, and getting the bull out before it spoils could still be kind of tricky. Good luck to all in the draws this year as it looks like Sept will find me in Alaska on a drop camp for caribou hunt. This will put me at 11 pts for 2011 and some decisions to make.

why been in roadless 20 times in last 25 years it is tough hunt even with horse 3.5 hours drive from vernal to trail head going in is easy down hill 5 miles to decent hunting 5 more to get away from poeple yhe hard part is going out all up hill met people in there with backpacks said they would never do it agin have there meat spoiled dont know of any offitters that do drop camp it is so warm you get bull down you pack him out trow in coolers left at truck then go next day or 2 pack out camp had 2 offitters with clinents asks about drop camps i told i would not do that to fellow hunter in roadlees for love or money if you set on this hunt find outfitter will be a decent hunt dont expect more than 330 tipe bull locals who tags last year said to many hunters not the qaulity it was2-5 years ago.thaks why.
