I am going to be hunting down around shay mountain this year, near monticello. I was wondering what I can expect as far as the deer, area, travel etc?
thanks

It not that bad over on the Shay, the road going up to the top is in really bad shape Jeep or Quad will get ya there it might be rough on a 4x4 pickup. Hunt the NE side where you can see into the canyons areas, we see a few good ones Elk and Deer here and there,I have seen just a few wallhangers up on top, you will see more about halfway down on the sides but it rough walking but if you sidehill it, you will jump some nices ones. south of Shay is a quad trail that runs along ways with some great places to camp, you run the ridge top above the road going toward Blanding(see more deer in here then on Shay). Me I like the Blues and the LaSals better or out in Eastland if you can find a place.I think you will love the area. If you got any more question PM

Watch out for bears on the sides, last spring I was walking through the PJ on the south side when I ran into a mama and cub. it scared the @#$% out of me, less than 15 ft away. I had walked past the mom before I had realized what was going on, then I saw the cub. I had walked parallel to both of them and was now past them both before I saw either bear. it was about and hour till dark so I decided I had gone far enough. but I had to turn around and walk past both bears again. less than 15 ft away, the only thing between the bears and I was a tree or two and my .45. ya you guessed it i had that .45 in hand the whole way back. and then i cleaned my pants. I hiked on the sw end also and i saw nothing, no horns, no deer, no elk, and no bears. Aspen flats might be a good area to check out, as well as the top of shay and the slops. that area is increadable enjoy it.
