UT Elk is it worth it??

A year ago I would not even ask.

Here is the question. Wife and I each have 9-10 elk points (not positive exact numberI am not at home).

With what I have read about UT elk herds I am questioning as to whether I should get off the merry go round.

These are my thoughts.

As it is now, I have more hunts and funner hunts close to home in NM. They may not always be for book animals, but, there are some good animals to be had close to home. When we do draw out of state hunts it seems we do not have the time needed to devote to the hunt.

I originally put in for UT elk because I felt it was one of my best chances to kill that once in a life time bull (370+)

From what I have read that era may be over. I know it was never a easy thing to do, but, the chances of killing that kind of bull was more likely in UT.

Also, what I have been reading the experience is not what I like. I have been reading about lots of hunters and non hunters all over the mountain.

To continue to do this it takes about 90 bucks a year to continue to build points and with 10 points it could go another 10 years. And chances are at some point the cost to continue to do this will go up.

I know I will get lots of answers like. drop out give us a better chance and that kind of stuff.

The unit I would want would be the San Juan. Its closer, its more of a desert hunt from what I can tell, bigger unit less crowds I suspect.

Is it time to cut my losses in UT?? I have about the same amount of points in AZ and that may be a better quality experience though it is expensive to continue to apply there as well.

Love to hear the opinions and all the smart axx post as well.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-04-10 AT 08:09PM (MST)[p]NMPaul, I have been around a lot of places hunting elk and deer. There are still real good bulls here in Utah. If you have put in for Utah and Arizona at the same time for ten years than I imagine that you have a little money in your back pocket to hire a guide or hire some one that you might know to take you. I think Utah has some of the best mountains in the United States. So I think that it would be worth it for you and your wife to have a great experience here in Utah. Also, if you have put in that long than keep at it. You'll get your chance at a big bull. But I would definitely look into getting a guide for the unit that you want to draw. Because some units are on their way down and some are getting a little better. Good Luck!

With 9 or 10 points you can't give up now. I would stick with it for sure. When you get one of those big UT bulls on the ground it will be worth it. Good luck!

utah i think is still worth it with out a doubt. now oregon theres something worth dropping. i think the hunting fools take on oregon is gonna open a lot of eyes . great story by the way you got my vote.

10 years from now things might have changed again, better or worse. BUT you don't want to say, "What if" 10 years from now.

And you or your wife may get that 370+ in NM before then and it'll just be a great experience.

Thanks for the honest answers. Was sure I would get some off the wall ones. :)

What kind of time frame do you think it would be to draw a early rifle hunt in UT in one of the top couple units.

My hope is down the road I would have more time and the out of state hunt would be more enjoyable than stressful.

If its SJ early or bust, its about like playing the lottery. I haven't done the math, but its easy to see that with 10 points, it will take you around 300 years to draw an early NR SJ tag!

If I were you, I'd start looking at units a bit north, a la sal la sal Early tag would be realistic, and not much further to travel. Ya, it isnt the SJ, but big bulls live and die on that unit every year!

Just being realistic..

Heck yes ya should stick with Utah LE bull.

You both, with 9/10 pts could almost draw this year in a bow or mzzy draw.

Plus being a Bonus point state everyone is in the hat that applies.

I would suggest to keep at it.

"I have more hunts and funner hunts close to home in NM"

I am confused, I thought you had never hunted elk in Utah??

Seriously, why not try an easier to draw unit? There are always big bulls killed in the "other" units.

If you rely on the San Juan, with the points you have, you might be 85 years old by the time you draw.

I would apply for a different unit and give it a go....

The point I am making is that if I make the investment, of time and money to go to UT I want to give myself the best chance I can.

Last year I may have hunted more than some guides. Went on a lot of hunts, most of them were tags family or friends had. I enjoy those as much as having the tag myself. We hunted or scouted almost every single weekend and currently are hunting weekends now for Barbary sheep and 2 of my kids have oryx
tags in March.

The point is I am not looking to just go hunting.

I can do that at home. If I am going to spend the extra money and most important the time I want a fair chance to shoot a once in a life time animal. Also, I have been on a lot of guided hunts and have finally come to the realization that most I do not enjoy even a tenth as much as the ones we do on our own.

When I do go, I will do anything I can to do it on my own if it is reasonable at all.

Keep on trucking with utah the juice is worth the squeeze it seems people with 10 or less draw more often than 10 and over case in point i drew on 8 points 7 years archery switched to rifle drew tag!!!

NMPaul, If you draw a tag on the San Juan I would be glad to help you out for no charge like I did for a hunter last year. We ended up getting a 379 7X7. You will not have to hire a guide and I am sure we can find you an incredible bull. Good luck!!

NMPaul,
I'm right there with you at 9 non - resident points.
I'm considering applying for the any weapon hunt on the Manti.
I planning on sticking it out for the reasons you mentioned, best chance for an incredible bull. I think with changes coming next year it my actually get easier to draw , or maybe not. I guess we'll just have to hang in there and see what happens.
If there were 2 or 3 more non resident tags on the SJ I might consider trying to draw one there.
Good Luck.

I think it would depend upon your age as the deciding factor if your over 60 right now, you might think about cashing those points in sooner then later. If your 40 you can play the point game for a good deal longer.IMO

You have been reading to many posts by Winey MM posters that think the sky is falling. Your loss if you pack it in now.

Paul, I've followed a lot of your posts and pics in the new mexico forum as I'm sure a lot of others have. it's obvious that you're dedicated and willing to do what it takes. You would have no problem finding guys on here, me included, willing to help you out on a Utah LE Elk hunt.

There will always, always be opportunities in Utah for buster bulls. The special interest for trophy animals influence is way too strong to think otherwise. Stick it out if you have the years ahead of you as others have mentioned.

PM me if you would like as I think I could direct you to a couple areas that would give you a chance at what you're looking for without the wait. Are you looking at early rifle I assume???

Sorry Paul, I guess it had a been a day or two since I read the original posts and saw where you said it was rifle you were after.

Send me an email and I'll give you my take on these and point you to a couple areas and guys that could possibly provide what you're looking for this year or within the next couple.

Unless you're about 20 years old, I would not wait out the san juan or the fillmore pahvant as it will be a long long time until you're close to guaranteed. I would look at the next teir and make sure you have the time to make your best effort that year.

Thanks fatherofthree (btw I am father of 3 also).

I think what I will do is continue to do the point thing for awhile longer.

The hope is I have more time down the road. Right now I go to KA for business every other week and have business in NM as well.

It is really hard for me to get away for an extended period of time to do an out of state tag justice.

Maybe 5-10 years down the road it will be different.

Till then will continue to put in for early rifle San Juan and maybe get stupidly lucky.

Paul, after your draw in WY last year, I betting you get that SJ tag soon. Be positive.

I understand time management and worrying about not having enough time to do a tag justice. My last year was an example.
3 hunts, back to back to back. But I enjoyed every minute and the NM tag got short changed and that was as much effort on my part as time.

Thats exactly it Califelkslayer, instead of being thrilled about drawing a great tag out of state, the last couple years it almost threw me into a panic..

That being said, my wife and I had some great road trips, super memory, and the chance to take a quality animal. Pretty hard to beat that.

Some day when I got more time I may start cashing in more of my out of state points.

Right now NM is giving me all I can handle.

Stay the course. It is worth it and you will be able to marshall plenty of help and other resources to do the hunt justice. And if New Mexicans were like Texans, you could just take the tack that the San Juan was just another NM state park its so close.....LOL!!

You should definately give it up! Why? Because you have more points than me!
