Idaho Preferencr Points?

I've been hearing rumors for months that Idaho is going to a preference point system this year. I talked to their F&G Dept. at the RMEF Convention last week. The guy told me it was going to a Nevada style system and it was going to be decided this past week. He said it would either start in 06 or 07. Has anyone heard anything?

I talked to the Idaho rep at their booth and he thought they would go to the Nevada style bonus point system and square the bonus points (like NV does) giving multiple time applicants a greater chance of drawing. I haven't heard exactly what the comissioners finally adopted ????

I talked to one of the commissioners about this about two weeks ago and he told me this is all he knows about Idaho?s bonus point system.

#1 There will be a bonus point system
#2 It won't start until 2007

As of two weeks ago approval for the bonus point system still had to pass in the state legislature. I'm not sure when it was going to be voted on but the F&G were optimistic that it will pass.

It sounds like the bonus point system will increase the application price by only ?2 or 3? dollars.

Like nvmuley said, the F&G has been talking about having a system similar to Nevada?s. Nothing official has been decided about the system so I guess any type of bonus/preference system could be addopted.

They haven't decided which species will be included. The way it sounds sheep and goats will not be included. The F&G news releases have talked about having bonus points for deer, elk, antelope & moose. At this point who knows what species will be included.

I believe the commisioners met last friday. Maybe we will hear something next week.

The articles that I have read, on the bonus points to be started in 2007. They are talking about, if you don't draw in 2006, you will have a point going into the 2007 draw. The Huntin Fool dicussed the topic in this month issue. MIke

Heres the stats I heard. Per the survey fish and game did.

42% of the public opposed a change.
36% supported it.
the rest of the % didn't care.

hmmm........

Uh oh, do I apply for a sheep tag to make sure I get a point if they include it or do I apply for moose as it appears it moose will more than likely be in for sure? Don't want to make the wrong decision!

On other web sites instaters were totally against it. I have mixed feelings it takes what a $140 to buy a hunting licence if your a out of stater just to put in for the draws. If you dont draw you can by otc tags but you dont get a bonus or pre point. I also thought the waiting period should have been longer once you drew a tag. Russ

nvmuley,

I could be wrong but when I talked to the commissioner a couple weeks ago it sounded like the commission wasn't going to be making any decisions about what type of bonus point system any time soon. The commission met last week to go over the big game seasons for this fall.

chasemike,

I could be wrong but doubt it. As far as I know there will be no bonus points awarded to this years unsuccessful applicants.

Deerlove,

I also have some mixed feelings about a bonus point system but still feel strongly that a bonus point system isn't in my best interest. I've put in for deer, elk and antelope for the last eight years without drawing a tag (besides X tags).
Bonus point systems encourage more people to apply every year which will decrease my chance of drawing a tag. Those that faithfully apply every year are going to have better odds of drawing without a bonus point system. If I couldn't buy an over the counter tag for deer and elk, I would be all for a bonus point system.

BrianID, You seem to be right on with your advice. I just received an e-amil from ID F&G and no mention at all about bonus points. I was lead to believe they were going to decide on it last week by the guy in their RMEF booth.

From the Idaho Statesman...it appears they did discuss bonus points last week...

"? Hunters can apply for bonus points for a species even if they don't intend to hunt that year, but if they don't enter the drawing for two years, they lose their points.

? Bonus points only will be used for first drawings of each species and would not apply to left-over tags or second-choice hunts.

? Hunters who apply in groups will have their bonus points averaged.

? Bonus points will cost an additional $2 to $4 over existing controlled hunt application fees, depending on which contractor F&G hires to oversee the system.

Commissioners will allow hunters to comment on the plan before it is formally adopted. The bonus point system will likely start in 2007, but hunters could earn bonus points this year to be applied in the 2007 controlled hunt drawings."

I'm lost, so do you get points this year? ofcourse it won't effect the draw this year but is this the " max point' year you don't want to miss?

Good question huntindude. I've talked to one of the commissioners and several F&G employees in the last month and none of them led me to believe that you would get a point for applying this year. I've also read several statements directly from the F&G that said the bonus point system will not start until 2007.

chasemike's and BUGLELK's posts are the only two things that I have heard anything about getting a point for applying this year. Both of them have backed up there posts with reliable sources.

As far as I know nothing is set in stone yet. If I had to bet on it at this point I would say that you would get a point for applying this year. It looks like I might be owing chasemike an apology.

I would bet if you call several of the F&G's regional offices you would get answers that would contradict each other. Hopefully the F&G will give a detailed explanation before the application period begins. My guess is that a couple months from now there will still be many unanswered questions about Idaho?s bonus points system.

This is just my 2 cents, take it for what it is worth.

Thanks for the info guys. You made up my mind. I usually apply anyways because their odds are pretty good because you have to buy the license. I don't want to miss out by always being one point behind the max.

I called Idaho this morning and they said there would NOT be any points awarded this year, I guess it depends on who you talk to. I was going to apply but it's hardly worth eating the fees if you don't get a point.

A true blackmail state for one more year. Helk, at least OR has points, even though your chances of drawing a good unit are basically nil.
