Manti late hunt

Just wondering if anyone has some insight on the Manti late hunt, my buddy is guaranteed to draw the late hunt with 11 points but is worried about snow and locating the bulls. Should he just continue to try for the early hunt? Any help would be appreciated.

Keep the points and wait for the earl. My buddy draw and they were not rutting, they were not down on winter gfround yet, but the snow had them off the top meadows and in the middle thickets. Very tough after all the other hunters had pressured them for a couple months.

11 points is alot to give up for that type of hunt.

I had the late manti tag a few years ago. I enjoyed the hunt, it was a tough one for sure if your looking for a big boy. At the time, I did not have an atv nor did my dad who helped me. I went up 4 days before the hunt and scouted different areas but turned up nothing big. There was no snow anywhere until the hunt started. It snowed and snowed on us and all dad and I could locate were small bulls. Total, we saw close to 700 head of elk and only about 20-25 were bulls in the 11 days we were up there. I saw two six points and shot the smaller of the two because I did not see the bigger one until I was hauling out the meat from my elk. Knowing what I know now about the area, and having shed hunted a few of the areas since, and having a four wheeler now, I am confident I could find bigger better bulls in some different areas. These areas I'm talking about would be brutal on the body as they are remote, steep, thick areas where I found the bigger bulls hanging in. If you are not willing to get into these type of areas, and do not have access to atvs to get you around to more terrain in a shorter time frame, than I would suggest you hold out for the early hunt. I drew with 6 points, and did not put much thought into it until I drew because I didn't think I would draw that soon.

It is tough. Brother in law had it a few years back and got in on two really big bulls. I had it two years ago and because of snow the elk were in the middle country, a lot stayed on the carbon side, ended up with a 6 point but nothing huge. Last year other brother in law had it, but the early guys knocked the crap out of the bulls. Most of the herd bulls were 5-points(thats what he got). Had a really good bull that made it through the early and muzz only to be poached. There is a huge herd (all bulls) that winter out by Spring City Cemetery, but when they get there is up to the weather and a lot of ground between there and the high country is private. Send me a message if I can be of service with info, but I would do the early if I had it to do again.
