I have a 74 year old father who would like to draw this year cause of his age. I have been trying to decide the best unit for a chance at a six point bull doesn't have to be huge. He can't hike very far. On fairly flat ground he might be able to walk 400 yards. He has a bad back. Any info on the late hunt for this unit would be helpful. He has 14 points. Thanks

I think this is one of the hardest units personally... It is very dry, and hot... The elk move a ton... I would look for a more confined unit maybe.

My dad drew this tag sw elk muzzle loader. He has nerve problem in his legs and can't walk far. He took a 7 x 7 the first evening of the hunt. Jesse Ship helped us and called the bull into 35 yards . He missed the first shot and Jesse stopped him at 75 yards and he dropped him in his tracks.
Fun hunt just over a little to quick.
Worked out perfect for him ! He was about 200 to 300 yards from his wheeler. He has a hard time walking to much further then that on uneven ground.

Is it true that Shipp and Webber drug that 7x7 out whole? It was more like 1,000 yards to the wheelers or should I say van? 2001 was a long time ago.

SW Desert is the toughest place to hunt elk in the state IMO. Lots of thick cover, mustangs and HEAT.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-10 AT 07:45AM (MST)[p]thanks guys we have just over a week to decide. Anyone know what the Monroe late hunt is like?

If you lookin to hunt the late hunt its not hot. its a little tougher to find the bulls with no bugles but still very good opportunity to kill a decent six.

pm sent

Corky where you there ? I think you remember it better then I do . lol Yes it was in 2001 and yes we did drag it back to the road whole. But 1000 yards may be stretching it a bit. Cody and Jesse aren't that bad.
No vans where in the area. So how do you no so much about this hunt ? Do I know you ?

I hunted the management hunt 2 years ago same dates as the late hunt and the big boys were still ruttin it up hard and were easy to find. we killed a 358 5x5 on the second day 5 hrs it was on the four wheelers on its way back to camp.

Stick with the peaks their are many elk coming and going on the unit at all times i hunted the early and had chances on dozens of bulls and killed a toad and helped out a female hunter kill her bull would love to help out your dad if he draws pm me.
