I am planning on making a trip out west to Utah for the fall of 2007 to go on a guided mule deer hunt. I am looking for a good buck that might score from 170 to 180 BC or perhaps better. I'm in the process of finding an outfitter, and have limited my choices to three, Cal Haskel with Weatherhorn Outfitters, Jed Wayment with J&J Outfitters, and Shaun Labrum. If any of you all have any insight or can let me know who is reputable and who is not and any of your opinions on any of these three outfitters would be very greatly appreciated.

Ive met Cal Haskell a few times, and he seems like a pretty good guy. Ive hunted one of his properties that is now a guided only property. If you end up going with him, tell him you want the Minnie Maude, and you want Jason to guide you. He'll put you onto a 170+ buck almost gauranteed.

hey Tony,

Thank you, I appreciate that. I have conversed with Cal on the phone on a few occasions and he sounds like a real stand-up type of guy.

My brother and I went on a hunt with Jed 3 years ago. He runs a first class operation and some real good deer were shot in camp. He is a straight shooter!!! I would highly recommend him!!

Neither one are my top choice for Utah.
Now having said that I have hunted with both outfitters and i do like them both, Jed?s leases are much more strictly controlled then Weatheredhorns even thought I think Weatherhorns has better mule deer properties, Weatherdhorn also has the better accommodations

I don't think you can go wrong with J&J. They are great people and hunt great animals. They have been very helpful to people I know who were not paying clients.

257 Tony,
It sounds like you now that Price area pretty good. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the CWMU's down there for both deer and elk. I've been applying for Nutters elk the last 5 years and have thoughts of trying Pagano's or minne maude.
thanks smokepole

200itus. Good luck narrowing your outfitters choices down. I hope when your talking 200itus it's the gross score on a nice buck and not some fat chick at your local RMEF banquet. ha ha ha just kidding ya.

Well now that I cant afford to hunt there anymore, I'll tell ya about it. It all depends on when they would let you hunt if you were to draw. If they let you go during September or the first week of October, youd have a good chance at a 300" bull, with 320-330 being the biggest youd likely see. If you hunt any later than that, dont expect to see many Elk at all. Im sure they are hoping to see some bigger bulls in the coming years. Its a really cool place with lots of spots to hunt, just enough roads to access the place without there being a road in every canyon. Its basically my favorite place Ive ever hunted by far! But I cant afford to hunt there now, they almost quadrupled the price when turned it to a CWMU.

I too would recommend J&J. I don't know the other ones though. I did hunt with Jed, but it's been about 3 years ago. Good people.

To all that have been kind enough to reply, and give their opinions I thank you all. The information has been extremely helpful. I'm getting pretty damned pumped to come out west and chase a mule deer.
Thanks,

200itus-
have you looked at Bucks & Bulls Guides & Outfitters in Utah?
They are one of the very best in the west, top notch all the way around. Look at their website, LOT'S of 180-200+" bucks killed every year. Definately not cheap though!!

call whiteriver guides and outfitters. They are top notch and you will get one of the owners not a 3rd of 4th teer scrub.

Hey runner,
I appreciate it, are they located out near the Co/Ut stateline in the Vernil Area?

The owner lives in Ely NV. He consistantly kills the biggest bucks in Nevada every year. He has his Number 1 guide who lives in Utah county and has hunted the Bookcliffs in Utah several times and unit 10 In colorado.

I believe tony abbott from MDF knows them well you might call him. I think his number is posted on one of the other fourms.
