I am looking for a good trophy elk hunting unit colorado. It would be an archery hunt. A unit that has a bulls over 350 maybe even a 400. I already know about the well advertised 201. I was hoping you guys and gals could give me some help.

hfinger, it is not going to be hard to narrow your search for true 350+ bulls in Colorado.

it is a very very short list.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say 2, 10, and 201 but that may be pushing it these days.

Good luck! I think Colorado is more opportunity for elk than quality. Like mentioned before not easy to fill that request.

unit 10 my boss had archery tag last year killed 345 bull on day 7 it was biggest bull he seen he said alot of 300 to 320 bulls good luck.

I personally think you have a better chance of getting a 350+ bull in an otc unit if you hunt it every year then hunting one of the top units once in 20 years. We see 330-350 bulls every year in an otc unit. Just use your feet a little bit.

I have hunted and scouted in unit 2 for the past 15 years and can honestly say I have never seen a bull that would go 400. Maybe one that would push 375. Most of the elk I have seen have been 300 to 330 class.

As stated, there are not many units that consistently produce 350+ bulls.

With the above reports on 2 and 10, you can do as well in 61. Even hear about an occasional 380-400 there. BUT a great unit for 300-340s.

Thanks guys
I Like to hike and go back packing every year so searching for them wouldn't be to bad I'm only 16 and I was looking to start getting points towards an area I was also looking at a big horn sheep area I was thinking somthing up toward avalanche lake I believe it is the maroon bells national forest any advice All is appricated

If you are starting from scratch, you've got PLENTY of time to figure out the best elk/sheep units in CO! Ask the same question here again in 25 or 30 years (probably more than that, but I don't want to be a downer!).

In the meantime, buy points and work on plans to hunt OTC/easy draw areas in CO and other states. There's plenty out there to keep you busy.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-10 AT 07:15PM (MST)[p]Wish I had stated collecting points at 16! But you need to do some hunts in the meantime to keep the blood flowing. Plenty of fun hunts that can be had OTC and as a second choice tag. I am 52, been hunting since my 20s and I am still looking for that first 350 bull! Good luck.

X-1 txhunter said about getting points at 16 until now it would be in the high 30's. LOL

YA I am doing other hunts this year I put in for elk in 33 deer in 35 and bear in 35. the bear hunt is basically to give me time to search for elk. also going spring turkey. it is nice to have a sight like this where everyone isn't caught up in their own ego. Is there a way to put in for points in other states without paying the 500 bucks just for the point? Also looking for trophy units in utah new mexico and wyoming
