planning a muzzy hunt in units 71 or 74, anyone hunted either of the areas in Sept. and if so what were your hunts like, numbers of elk, elevations they were at in Sept. size of bulls ect. any info would be helpful, thanks

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-10 AT 05:42PM (MST)[p]I'm sorry the other night I posted a quetion about an up comining muzzle loading elk hunt in units 74# or 71# I was asking about heard size's bulls to cows and any knowledge at all about either of these units, but I forgot to ad the state, these are in colorado. sorry, any info about elk in either of these units would be great

I have buddies that hunt in 74 and they say it is rough country, but they get shots at good elk. They basically walk the spines and catch the elk going from feeding to bedding areas. The area they hunt is mostly wooded.

thanks I appreciate allthe help we can get, if we go with 74# we'll go with an outfitter I found, that will pack us and gear up to his camps that will help save time and wear and tear walking up from a base camp every day. thanks and if you get any more imfo about 74# shoot me back a message, I'm hoping to get a bear tag but it sounds like they go fast

There is nothing easy about 74. I'll be there also if I draw a tag. I thought I was all set with my preference points but with the new changes for the muzzle loaders who knows what you will need for preference points. I will be there with a bow if I don't draw a MZ tag.

74 is a bigger area, and if you have the means, it is easier to get away from the crowds. There are lots of elk in 71, but lots of hunters too. That means that most bulls you will run in to will be raghorns. To get into bigger bulls there, you need to get on private ground.

Here is a link to a good outfitter in 71 (public land). Ask him to send you an email brochure (or PM me with your email and I will send you one). He will be honest with you.
