Im able to hunt a ranch near Leo, Wy. and the owner of the ranch said that they have introduced wolves back to that area. They havent found any dead animals but have seen wolves in their hay field. Anyone else know more about this or has anyone else seen the wolves?

I was out by Leo once headed to the Miracle Mile. I thought I saw Elvis. Wolves by Leo? They were probably chasing a Boone and Crocket mountain goat...

I saw an alien space ship in Elko, Nevada just yesturday, ha ha. But to be serious Wiszard, I don't know anything about that area but in Stanley, Idaho the wolf has definitely made hunting bad and there have been a couple of instances of people being harrassed by wolves. Western Horseman magazine ran a story about a man and his wife who were riding horses and camping a couple of years ago and the wolves were harrassing the horses. The man had chased the wolves off once but the next morning they were back at it again. This time a wolf charged the mans wife and the man shot the wolf. Its been sometime since I've read that story so I may not have all of the details correct but the point is that they are out there and they are causing trouble. Don't forget the wolf spray! Oh yeah, they don't make wolf spray. Maybe bear spray will work. Anyway goodluck and be careful. fatrooster.

Sure could be the case. I have a friend who says they have seen tracks of three wolves up near Laramie Peak. If that's the case, they had to come through your country to get here. I doubt they are introduced. There are so many up near Jellystone Park they'll undoubtedly travel and occupy new habitat.

Thank you ICMDeer for backing up my question. I really dont think that my buddy would be lying about seeing the wolves. And by the way, everybody sees aliens in Nevada!

How are things around Laramie Peak this year? I've been thinking about that area for Plan B. My Plan A has been unraveling pretty fast the last couple of weeks. Hope things in WY are going great.

Tim,

Things are great. I still can't recommend J, even as a second choice. Nearly all of the good deer are on private ranches and the public ground gets pounded. We've gotten some real good moisture in the past few weeks. Wet spring snow the past 10 days. I can almost hear the grass and antlers growing. Shoot me a pm at home if you need help. Maybe you should be looking at other options if you are struggling.

Take care.

A Wolf was recently filmed in North Park Colorado by the CDOW...you can be 99% sure he came from the Yellowstone "introduction". They won't stay were you put them so the rancher isn't really lieing! If the made it to central Colorado, I'll bet they have made it to South Dakota too. Before that, they found a yellowstone collared wolf dead on I-70 in central Colorado.

If they are around Alcova, I am glad I am hunting muddy mountain elk this year while there is still a herd to hunt, and before the quota gets reduced.

Now, who has tips on Muddy Mountina elk for me?

I will back up the story about the dead one 100% I heard it on the news hear when it happened. I have also heard from game and fish that they have found some of the collared wolves as far south as Utah in deep winter. Those little buggers can sure hunt migrating herds. It seems odd to hear of a wolf near Leo, but stranger things have happened. I wouldn't discredit the sighting, I just hope I don't have to compete with them there too.

about every ten years or so you hear about a wolf down around Crocker Hills (Eastern side). couple of years back even the Game Warden saw one but no-one got him the claim they are pushed down from Canada looking for new ground, but a few have been taken in the area, so I'm sure their are a few down that way already.

Grasshopper,
hunting the east end of Muddy just above the Lone Star Ranch is awesome. Take the two track just past the gazebo on top of Muddy to the east that overlooks SMITH creek. There are some great pockets just west of Lone Star's ranch that hold a lot of elk naturally, but if you hunt as late in the season as possible, Lone Star's ranch manager and the owner hunt the area on the last few days of the season. The good thing for you is that he's not a very good shot, and most times the hog bulls get pushed into those pockets and get away. If you would familarize yourself with the area with maps, and gps, you can really snake in and out of forest and blm property without touching private land, even though the owner and manager swear that it's all theirs.
As far as the wolves are concerned, don't get me started. I used to live in Casper, but I now live in Bondurant, just 30 miles south of jackson, and I'm severely disappointed. The wolves are everywhere, and there's no stopping the disrespectful buggers. If I weren't on a monitored website, I'd tell you how I really feel about them and what us ranchers in Sublette county would like to do about them!! They are killing all the lions as well as deer and elk. It's pitiful. Something has to be done about them and fast.....their time has past, they just don't belong here anymore.

Has anyone heard the rumor that in Idaho, they soak LARGE sponges with tuna fish oil and leave it lying around. The rumor goes that the wolves eat the sponge and can't pass it. Not sure if this is a myth or what happens when the sponge doesn't pass. i can only imagine.

THANK YOU snakerivercat man!

Just the advice I was looking for. I hope to get up there in June to start figuring out the boundaries and will check the east side over good.
