After 9 years I have finally drawn the tag I think could be one of the best in the state. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Although if you get the kind of weather that would make this a great trophy hunt and make the remaining elk leave Yellowwolfstone Park, you probably shouldn't have many grizzly bears still out roaming around. IMHO If you are DIY then I think hunt as close to wilderness as you can on the south side of the highway. I have considered applying for this tag for some time. Good luck.

Carry a bugle. At least when you bugle you'll know where the Four legged mistakes are when they howl at you so you're not having to wonder why there isn't any elk around.

Congrats. You will have a great time. I drew this tag about 10 years ago. This was before wolves were as prevelant as they are today. Elk Fork has a good horse trail up it. If you have horses this is a good place to try. It seemed to be the most popular area in 56. I did not have horses so I hunted areas that were less accessable. Pagoda creek and clocktower creek were great areas to try. I waited till last week holding out for cold and snow but never got either. The elk just didn't move down while the season was open. We saw a few resident elk but not the caliber of bull I was looking for. Game and fish extended the season that year due to the low kill rate but only for cows. We definetly saw grizzlies even after thanksgiving. If you can wait to hunt until the timing is right. The game and fish office in Cody was very helpful when I called to ask if elk were moving out of the park yet.

I hunted this unit about 4 years ago and shot a very nice 350 bull. The hunting was tough and I did see 5 grizzly bears and 6 wolves while I was hunting. If you see wolves, find a different area, the elk generally will leave the area. I did see grizz thru the end of November. Be sure to walk you butt off and you'll see some awesome country and find a nice bull, but they're NOT on the road.
Good luck, hunt hard and post us a pic of your bull,
Kurt
