Numbers are out and if I understand correctly Wasatch will have 77 more tags given out this year. Do you think this is a good thing?

UtahElk,

Please post a link to the numbers that you are referring to, we'd all like to see them.

Thanks

Looks like 35 more management buck deer tags too.

Anybody else get a kick out of the fact these numbers are being released the same day apps are due?

I'm not so concerned with the number of tags as the allocation of tags with each weapon. At least they decreased the tags by 6 during the rifle hunt. Most of those tags went to the archery hunt so that doesn't bother me considering the bow hunt has a 30% success rate vs and 80%+ success rate for the rifle. This is what sportsman were crying for. More opportunity without ruining the quality. At least it's a start.

It's always an adventure!!!

I know we're in the elk forum but is the bison hunt a typo? Or did they really cut that many tags? Man that will make the once in a lifetime hunters putting in for bison upset

Its my understanding, that the bison is not a typo. The reason for the cuts is so they can transplant them, instead of shoot them.

I was also shocked to see as many more management buck tags this year compared to last year.

The Wasatch got 45 more archery elk tags, cool. Southwest desert got 14 more archery tags which through me through a loop (that is almost 64% more that what there used to be). They did take away 7 any weapon elk tags on the Wasatch. 82 muzzleloader antelope tags on Plateau! I knew there were a ton of goats on there but that is a more than a lot of tags! That mountain is going to be rolling in smoke opening day. Looks like the bison hunters are getting taken this year going from 170 to 39 tags, ouch. Bonus points for everyone! And it looks like my odds for a Willard Peak mountain ball of fluffy white hair just went up by three tags.

I always love to look over the numbers that the state puts out. Should be a good year for everyone except the Bison guys who are going to throw a fit or the reduction in tags.

You should look at High Uintas West for your goat tag. It has great odds compared to others and a ton of goats. They are giving 3 more tags there this year than they did last year. Access can be tough, but it is a sweet hunt.

I think its a great move on the wasatch, hopefully this trend will continue and spill over to other units. I say this not just because I am a bowhunter, but using archery tags to burn points with only a 30% success rate will help rifle and muzz hunters odds too.. Good Job DWR

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-10 AT 09:57AM (MST)[p]You can also thank the Elk Committee for the changes. Alot of what has been implemented has come from the elk committee. they tried very hard to bump up quality and at the same time increase opportunity. They did it by decreasing rifle tags and increasing archery and muzzle loader permits. The units that are below age objective actually took a decrease in permits, but some units had an increase in permits. The real story will come when the antlerless permit numbers come out.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-10 AT 10:02AM (MST)[p]Thanks for pointing that out nebo12000, thanks elk committee, I think archery tags are the way to give more oportunity but keep the quality of bulls up! Can you enlighten us on the antlerless proposals?

Should the Wasatch and Manti Elk units be broken into smaller units? What does eveyone think!!!

AWLB!
Will our bison points ever be worth a damn?
Maybe when We're 90 that Cow tag will sound gooooooooooood?

I'm still HELL_ON_WHEELS
I still throw a few back, talk a little smack

These tag number are not final yet. They have to go through the RAC meeting and then it is still up to the wildlife board.
My understanding was the wildlife board wanted to cut the number of elk tags not increase them. This is the earliest I think I have ever seen proposal tag number released. It will be interesting to see what happens when the board gets their say.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-10 AT 05:01PM (MST)[p]HELP!!!!

I know this is the elk forum but I have a critital question.......

The recommended deer permits list #26 - LaSal, Dolores Triangle Muzzy Deer at "0" non-resident permits.

The 2010 Big Game Guide Book has this same #26 hunt listed in "Black Text" (the book indicates - black text: At least one non-resident permit)

Am I missing something?
which is correct?!?!?!?

I called the DOW representative and she couldn't answer my question so forwarded me on to someone else (she was not in so I left a message).

Its about time we realize the benefits of primitive weapon hunts. Lower sucess rates, younger age class bulls are taken, and lots of HAPPY ARCHERS. We need alot more of this to happen across the board. It brings down drawing odds for other popular areas in the state and everyone benefits!!!!! We should all push for more archery tags in all the limited entry units. WIN WIN situation!!!

ESPECIALLY for those that own archery shops! LOL....

54 total permit increase on the SouthWest Desert. The unit is allready heading down fast. 10 years ago I wouldn't trade a Southwest Desert tag for any in the world. If I had 10 points now I wouldn't even put in for it. Any idea why they lowered the age class on the Southwest Desert?

If it's that big of a deal to you, isn't it worth $10? Skip Burger King one day if the new numbers would have made you change units. In years past I would of happily paid $20 to know the projected tag numbers this early......

The archery shop I have is an online store and not my full time work. In fact 95% of the sales on the site are out of staters and most of them are from back east. I did not make that comment with the hope of making more money. I make a good living at my full time job and the website provides extra income to go on all my hunts each year. Increasing archery tags in Utah would not help my online store in the least so a3dhunter you are wrong on that one...but I do FULLY believe in archery as a management tool and I believe it should be used more to manage age class and trophy quality for everyone. It would also make rifle hunters happy because their draw odds would increase as us stupid archery guys burn our points on a "bow tag"

Yeah...I am sure the extra tags are going to make him at least a million dollars.

The SW Desert has been going downhill for the past three years. You can kiss it goodbye now. It was fun while it lasted. 86 tags in 2009 and 139 tags in 2010. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?

Nothing wrong with a fellow sportsman and local archery shop/website to get more sales and better their bottom line.

Hopefully the antlerless proposal numbers will show how serious the big game managers at the DWR are. Calf production on some units has to be increased or all of this will do little to increase bull numbers and hit the age objectives.

WTF!

61% increase in SWD tags! Seems a bit drastic doesn't it? The Late rifle tags almost tripled.

I can see some increases, but that's a little ridiculous. What's the public opinion about the SWD age objective? Will anybody actually go to the RAC's and voice their opinions?
