LAST EDITED ON Mar-16-06 AT 07:38PM (MST)[p]I've been considering buying a Colorado landowner tag this year.
I'm lookin at unit 61 3rd season rifle.
I really don't know what they are going for yet.
If they are too much, I was thinking 2nd season.
I'm just starting to test the waters on this idea.
Please PM me some info if you can offer some advice.
Thank You.

The big brokers, Carter and Pennington were asking 3,500.00 for the 3rd season last year. I made arrangements last year with a landowner for considerably less but he didn't draw. I left my deposit with him and he may draw two tags this year and I'll be in. My problem is I have 6 points and think I can draw a different unit that I feel is just as good or better. Last year I could have drawn the tag and forteited the tag price and kept my points. This year I'll probably end up with both tags and lose my points. Not the worst situation but I was hoping I could buy the landowner tag one year and draw the tag the next year. I feel that would double my chances of getting the quality buck I'm looking for.

I only have 4 points but I'm trying for 61 too, if you draw and want to sell the tag let me know.If you can get both landowner tags let us know we would try and buy both.

to get into area 61 as a non res youll need at least 12-13 points so godluck

hunter18,

You must be looking in the wrong coluum, for a NR it is 6 points to draw a rifle deer tag in 61.

Kilowatt,

61 3rd rifle is one of those units that is subject to the 20% non-resident caps. The quota was basically cut in half. It will take more points to draw this year than last.

I know that there were some with six points that did not draw 3rd season last year and I expesct that it will take more this year as already stated, doubt that it will take 12 - 13 though.
Last fall the third season in 61 was dry and warm and deer were not where you would expect to find them in those conditions, we saw no deer above say 6500 ft, and the majority of the deer I saw were on private land. Its no slam dunk hunt IMO, and just like any place else 200" deer don't come easy. Good luck

ok the regulations this year say any units that aren't a preumium unit are going 65/35 but a unit like 61 is preumium so its going to be 80/20. which will make it harder for you to get into 61 this year. im not the best speller either so if i have some words on here spelled incorrectly live with it.

All they go by is a 3 year average for res. draw, if a unit takes 5 or more points it will be 80/20 if it's less than 5 it will be 65/35. most Gunnison area deer hunts and all 61 deer hunts except the muzzy will be 65/35.

huntindude is right. Before anyone applies for ANYTHING they need to know EXACTLY what they are doing. For example, 61 is on a 65/35 split this year so if you've got the points, this is the year to do it. Next year it may go up significantly. With the time and money it costs to accumulate points in any state, you need to know how their system works, how a paticular herd is doing at the time and any proposed changes for subsequent years.
