could someone tell me why they did do away with the AR301! seemed to be a good thing.

SFW cried like babies that the AR301 was not FAIR because bonus points/waiting periods were not involved in drawing the tag, yet they have no problem with pulling HUNDREDS of tags from the general public and making them available via auction WITHOUT bonus points/waiting periods. They wanted people to play by the "rules" with the AR301 hunt, but of course they can't be subjected to those same "rules" when it comes to auction tags.
The AR301 hunt was a great idea that helped balance opportunity in some units while allowing quality to continue in others. I do agree that the AR301 could have used some tweaking (i.e. apply bonus points/waiting periods to help with the point butt plug, etc), but overall it was a great idea that should have continued. Something with potential and a lot of support from the actual hunting community was completely squashed because SFW "didn't like it".
Just one more example of an organization having way too much power for their own good.

I too thought that the 301 was a great program [I drew two tags in the three years it existed} Those archers who applied helped to relieve pressure on the point system and all hunters understood the no points gained no waiting period idea. If in fact SFW had a hand in squashing this program it shows that SFW is not a bowhunter friendly organization IMO

what exactly was the ar301 program?

it was a archery tag that if you drew you didn't have a waiting period. You could put in again the following year. Plus, if I'm right you could choose from 15 or so hunting units throughout the state. I might be leaving some stuff out but thats the general discription.
