Airline travel w/ elk antlers?

Has anyone flown elk antlers home from a hunt? I know in Alaska folks fly caribou antlers back all the time.

They(Horns) have to be split and all the points covered and taped and they will cost ya as much as a big bag.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Elk antlers do not need to be split but you will pay for an oversize bag which will be about $150-175. I flew American last October with a 370 class set and it was absolutely painless and they arrived with me in top shape. I completely covered all the points and most of the beams with foam pipe insulation (bought at Walmart in NM) and duct taped the heck out of it. Check with the airline you will be flying before heading to your destination and print out the rules in case the person at the counter doesn't know how to handle the situation. Have your ducks in a row and you shouldn't have too big of a problem.

Suggestion:

In addition to covering all the tine points, fasten a stout 1"x2"
or 2"x2" or straight tree limb with cord and duct tape across the inside spread. It will serve as both handle of sorts and to keep the skull plate intact.

A piece of garden hose cut into short lenghts with tape will also work on the points.

How To Hunt Coues Deer

We ship clients antlers all the time.
We use shotgun shell hulls and duct tape them to the tips....works great!

I have used hose on the tips and styrofoam pipe insulation on the beams. One good comment above is have the rules with you. I have had agents at the counter tell me all kinds of stories. Get to the aorport early.

Could ship if you shoot a raghorn.

It might be easier and cheaper to break the skull plate and ship them home UPS, that's if it is not a monster! Those 370 bulls need to go on the airline!

"Just duct tape it to the top of the plane". Sure, and then all the anti-hunters will complain when they see you flying home.

Yeah, I can split the skull plate and have done it with deer before.

Now duc taping them to the plane would be fine until we landed in liberal centeral.I would probably be belly deep in brass from my 300Wby fightin to get my horn off the plane.;)
