Montana Decoys

I've used one with excellent results on elk. The only draw back is the heavy stakes. I talked to them last year and they said they had a new lighter system in the works. Not sure if it's out yet. Other than that, I think they are often just enough to convince an indecisive and wary bull into shooting range.

+1

I am 100% convinced they are worth the additional weight.

When elk hunting this is just one more "must have" in my pack.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-22-10 AT 04:24PM (MST)[p]They work great!!! carry one in my pack...well worth the weight! Have thought about getting a 2nd one.

They are awesome. They are the closing factor when they hold up.
I do not leave camp with out having one in my back pack. I have had bulls run 100 yards up the hill to get to them. When the bull can't see the cow that is calling, the decoy placed in the right area of view closes the deal.Well worth the money.

Another fan.
I made a set of stakes from arrow shafts and they are much lighter but not necessarily better- especially in hard ground.

Dont take a guy who fidgets while you are setup, those elk are actively looking for you.

We have used them, but its hard to say if they have really worked or not. I dont get much of a chance to hunt very open country, its usually thick enough so when hes close enough to see the decoy, hes already within archery range.

I can say, we have never had a bull run off after seeing the decoy, so I think they may take some of the attention off you.

I carry mine with me, although I do not use it that much unless I am doing a long set-up type deal.

Things seem to happen to fast to use it under spot and stalk action.

Seeing these are so popular and that I was thinking about buying one to try out, what one of the three styles do you guys recommend?

I like the broadside one. Make sure its a newer one, the older ones were to light in color. IF you are going deep and hard and want to keep bulk and weight down, the rump one is good too.

Has anyone tried the faceing-you-decoy? I would love to see it used to sneak up to a bull in a meadow. I did the "hold the bow over head" trick one year, walked to within 50 yards of a 5 pt bull. Just curious......

Hunted 28 days straight, had bulls come in but never where I needed them. Got the broadside view the last 3 days of season had bulls all over me. My bull came in from 350+yds at a run stuck him at 4 yds, The decoy still worked he just hung around till he tipped over.

Really help if you are a solo hunter. here is mine on a water hole in 07, helped me seal the deal.

Teach your kids to hunt now, and you won't have to hunt for them later.

Not only do they work good but their customer service is great to !
I was going through my gear last weekend and got out my decoy and found I had some how busted the wire inside the decoy. I found a link to their site and sent them an e-mail asking if they could fix it. They responded that they would fix it free of charge or they would send me a replacement wire and explain how to replace it. Two days later I received 2 new replacement wires for my Rump decoy. It was actually very easy to replace and now my decoy will be back in action thanks to the great people at Montana Decoy.

We used one on a bull when it was windy and the decoy was flapping in the wind. The bull spooked but came right back to the decoy. It really helps to close the deal.

We used one last year, and I would say its a must have for the new bow hunter. I was able to sneek into a herd while hiding behind it. When I drew my bow they all ran off before I could get a shot at the bull, but I was plenty close enough.

Don't make the mistake I did, i wanted to save money and bought the Renzo, what a difficult decoy to work with , too noisy too many loseable parts and no way to pack and carry it quietly, its now a target and I sucsessfully use the montana decoy

I like the Black Diamonds Instant Elk decoy my self,
Though they are not photo copied they are each individualy dyed.
and you can get 4 difrent styles...

check out the main page under the decoy
now that realistic.
you can't get that with the other imitators.
I'll tell ya, I'd put the sneek on them.
I saw a couple of these at a national rifle banquet
here lately,
couldn't believe the money they went for.
Blew the mt.elk decoy away.
thin this year i'm going with one of these, or a couple
good luck, be safe.
20 weeks and counting down.

Those of you that use these decoys, how many of you are multi-day backpackers? I'm usually counting ounces and have upgraded a lot of gear to shave weight. Just trying to gauge how many of you use these in the backcountry. How easy are they to transport? Just having seen one close up but sure looks and sounds like a neat tool.

Thanks.

You can save on weight by tieing a couple strings through the decoy and just hanging it on a tree or bush.. It's a quick set up also..

LAST EDITED ON Apr-09-10 AT 09:08AM (MST)[p]bbright2,
I to was curious so I contacted Black Diamond, they said the decoy only weighs about 14 oz or about 1 lb
and the stick/polese 1/4 lb.
I hike in a coulpe + miles every day and figure in a days time from start to finish I cover 10 miles.
my pack starts out heavy about 12 lbs on the trip up i shed all my warm gear, to keep from sweeting it out,
once I slow down I get my warm stuff back on.
By midday it has all my warm gear packed in it again.
and then i'm hunkered down and resting just like the elk.
but spend this time by their watering hole,
they wil come to take a late morning or early afternoon drink.
I usaly stay high on some saddle untel the brease go down hill and then head as quick as i can to their feeding area.
hoping to get a good spot to ambush them.
i think the little weight isn't going to affect me.
heck, I'm pushing 60 and carring a couple extra pounds of me around anyway.
so hopefully by then i loose a little me.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-13-10 AT 02:56PM (MST)[p]Check out the Heads Up Decoy. It may be the most versatile elk decoy on the market that no one knows about. The entire decoy weighs less than a pound. It folds up to the sizes of a dinner plate. You can pack, you can flash it, you can clamp it to a tree, you can attach it to your bow, you can run with it...We've covered all the bases. www.headsupdecoy.com
