CO unit help

I have no points, but am looking to start building points and would like to try and get in somewhere to hunt on my 2nd or 3rd choice for mule deer. My plans are to put in on unit 10 for 1st choice (accumulate point) and put unit 79 and unit 3 as my 2nd and 3rd choices. Think I'll get drawn, and more importantly, are units 79 and 3 decent areas with some good public land? I'm from Texas, and am unfamiliar with Colorado hunting areas. What are you all's thoughts on this?

Maybe I should just enter unit 3 or 79 as my first choice to get in. Bottom line, I want to hunt CO this year, on decent grounds, with no preference points. Any and all help would be appreciated.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-06 AT 12:03PM (MST)[p]http://www.huntodds.com/ This link should help you figure out what units you might have a good shot at getting drawn on a second choice.

This link: http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/ will give you more info. Click on deer under "Hunt Recap Summaries" That link gives you actual numbers of residents and nonresidents and how many points they all had. Also tells you how many people put in for it as a second choice and if there were left over tags

Good luck

Exactly how does that work with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice hunts. Lets take unit XX for example: say there are 100 licenses with 35 of them going to non residents. If 36 nonresidents all put in for unit XX with no preference points as their first choice, I'm assuming they all get drawn. Is the only time your 2nd choice hunts come into play is when there are less 1st choice applicants than there are tags to be issued.

All but 1 will get drawn.
IF you dont draw your 1st choice, then your 2nd chioce is looked at. If there are tags for your 2nd chioce you will draw it. Preference points are not considered when your 2nd choice is looked at. Yes if there are more tags than 1st choice applicants they will go to 2nd, 3rd, etc. choices then to the leftover draw in August.
You might draw a 2nd rifle in unit 3. Maybe look at hunt codes with a * asterick they had leftovers last year.

Yes. 2nd choice tags are only issued IF there are leftover tags after the 1st choice drawings.

Thanks for the responses. If you were given the choice, would you take unit 79 2nd or 3rd season rifle mule deer OR unit 57 1st season rifle elk? Or neither? I think I could get in drawing as a nonresident on these. I have one point for elk coming into this year and none for mule deer. Should I try and get in on one of the two hunts I mentioned above, or just accumulate points and wait??????????

One other option you could consider is applying for a PP only and then surveying the leftover lists after the draw. There are definitely tags available after the draw and you still get a PP. But I do understand that obtaining a leftover license in a somewhat undesirable unit can cost a NR some $$$ just to hunt.

BTW, don't take undesirable in the wrong way. I intended it to refer to hunter #'s, terrain, or access. There are units that have relatively high buck/doe ratios that have leftovers, but that doesn't guarantee a critter.

Hope that helps.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-06 AT 04:29PM (MST)[p]How would a 'statewide' unit work as a second choice.I'm thinking of 62, or 65. Will there likely be leftover in these units.
How many points to draw muzzleloader in 62?
