Hi everyone, I have been reading your posts for quite awhile just havent posted much. I was hoping some of you could give me some insight into this unit as it seems you all are knowledgable. We are looking at going during the 2nd or 3rd season, if I understand correctly we can hunt both deer and elk. One of my hunting partners knows someone who lives in Ft. Collins and know the country and will pack us in so getting there shouldn't be much problem. I just havent heard much about these units except we shouldn't have trouble getting tags. I have heard recently this is a CWD area but I really dont know what effect that has on what we kill. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I only get so much vacation a year and I dont want to waste it. R.Mann

If you're concerned about success rates take a look at the DOW's website. Otherwise, I think you have the 1st step taken care of knowing someone that is accustomed to the area.

I had considered 191 because of success rates, but chose not to apply based upon logistics.

Whatever you do, I'd recommend heeding the CWD results lightly. Although present here in CO, I truly believe that it's effects CAN be overstated. IMO, CWD has been around as long as we have but never recognized.

My stance is that a Diet Coke or can of Copenhagen will kill me long before some venison steaks that are truly "all-natural".

I live in Fort Collins and have hunted theses units for 5 years for both deer and elk. That is great you have a contact that knows the area, hopefully the deer and elk as well. GENERALLY SPEAKING 191 is a deer unit because of the habitat and 19 is a elk unit, again that is a genereal rule of thumb and not to mean there is no elk in 191 or vice versa.
You are correct on getting a tag, it is easy, if you wanted you could buy a tag at wal mart the day before the season opened, there is simply a lot of leftover tags for this area.
PAcking in (or simply getting away from any road a mile or 2) is an excellent idea and I would recommend it.
I am a fan of the later seasons 3rd and 4th (mostly weather and bucks start rutting) so I would say go for 3rd and maybe consider 4th.
HUnting unit 19 is interesting. From Cameron pass your 1st access is Long draw rd, a little further east is Pingree park road which has crown point rd splitting off of it, next is stove prairie road. These roads provide most of the access into the unit and therefore have most of the pressure. You can try to park along highway 14 and go in or the buckhorn road on the south side of the unit. Hunting 19 is tough because most of the unit is dark heavy timber and the elk population is mediocre. Success rates are in the single digits for unit 19 for pretty much every season and only about 10-12% in the late cow (Nov/dec/jan) seasons! Often I ask myself why I still hunt in unit 19? Well mostly it is convience and familiarity. I bowhunt elk in 19 sometimes unit 7 (my archery tag allows me to hunt 5 units-7,8,9,19,191) and 2 or 3 years have got a late cow tag to fill the freezer (I have only shot 1 elk w/my bow and ironically shot 1 cow a few months later on the late hunt). Those are the only elk I have shot in unit 19. As far as quality for bucks and bulls in these units look somewhere else. There is a few but the are FAR and FEW between. CWD is in about 1% of the elk in these units. Deer CWD prevelence is about 5-20% The closer to Fort Collins the greater it will be. I would be more worried about finding and shooting a deer and elk than CWD! I have not hunted bucks in these units but my wife has shot 2 in 2 years (also her only years of hunting has been 2) one of which was a monster buck but this was done on private land close to town. i have shot a few does in unit 191. Yes you can hunt both deer and elk at the same time or 1 in 1 season and 1 in another if you want.
Hope it helps.

Jeff
