AZ 6A-South General Info

I was fortunate enough to draw a 6A-south archery bull tag. I am looking for some general info about hunting in AZ.

I work for the Dept of Environment and Conservation here in TN and will be hunting alone (I might have 1 friend who may come along and call. I have hunted in CO and WY and had several close encounters but have yet to release an arrow. Can anyone help me with these questions?

1. Was looking at joining the AZ hunt club (about $100). I saw thier add in the AZ hunting guide and checked out there website. I'm a little skeptical about how much help the information (tank locations, scouting reports)that they provide really is. It seems like I get a lot of the same info of the USGS maps. Or would it be better to renew my Hunting Fool subscribtion that I let expire and try to get some info through that service? Or just do my own scouting based on maps and Google Earth?

2. As far as hunting the tanks, I have heard some horror stories about the competition around them. Is it possible to find out of the way tanks that may not be so crowded? Appears that there are some that are less accessible based on the forrest service maps.

3. Do I need to bring stands and/or ground blinds to hunt these tanks? Or just make ground blinds?

4. Are the canyons/wilderness areas a good place to start my scouting?

Thanks for any information that you can provide. Feel free to e-mail me if you rather. Email is [email protected]

No don't join and don't renew hunting fool.

Maps, google earth, and other research will get you more.

You can find tanks that are not too crowded. First come first serve.

Bringing stands or blinds is a personal preferance. Many
tanks will already have them but people do get pissed if someone uses them.

Canyons and wilderness can be very productive places.

I had this hunt last year. Pick any road heading east of Forest Higway 3 and south of Stoneman lake road. Drive in a mile or so and set up a camp. You are literally in the middle of great elk country no matter which road you pick. I hunted pretty hard and hunted some tanks after opening weekend without any issues with other hunters but unfortunately no decent bulls would come to water during shooting light. I hunted about 9 days. I did not tag out but had plenty of opportunities at spikes and small raghorns.

Thanks for the information that yall have provided. I just got my home PC back up and running. So I'm begining to do the research on Google Earth as well as other places.

Would still appreciate any additional information that anyone has.

I definitely plan to save the money and not spend it on the AZ hunting club based on the info I received here and on other sites.

Also interested in your thoughts on chasing bugles etc vs sitting water in the afternoon. I am a whitetail hunter here in TN, so I enjoy covering some ground when I'm out west. But just want to do the best I can to take advantage of this opportunity.

Thanks again, Brad

I have the same tag and my method is spot & stock (chasing bugles) early morning then sit on a tank in the afternoon/evening. You may want to buy a ground blind and practice shooting out of it for sitting water or trails. If you are not picky you should go home with meat! I'll be scouting all Summer up there. Keep in touch and I'll give you some pointers.
