anyone hunted this unit before? i hear its a tough unit with not many elk. any info will be greatly appriciated

I used to hunt that area a long time ago. I would hunt the northern boundry of the Valles Caldera. Cerro Pelon, Cerro Pavo, and Cerro del Grant area is pretty good. There are a few water holes in the area that are great during a dry season.

I second what scottr mentioned. I have hunted that unit several times unsuccessfully but had opporunites. Its thick country and lots of pressure.
I have been a mile back from any main road or two-track and had an @$$hole in a hummer with rims (naturally) role by in a prime meadow and when I confronted him he said this was his land "whiteboy" and that he had been hunting there for twenty years.
I grew up hunting in that unit for twenty years also and it almost went to blows infront of his kid. Lots of them type of people up there. Have had people on enduro's cruzing the cow trails every year.

that seems pretty crappy, but i seem to run into stuff like that alot. i was thinking about the san pedro wilderness which i think is in the northern end of the unit? how are the roads, do you need a 4x4?

The san pedro wilderness is in 6A sorry. I think they changed the dividing line this year and cut off even more of 6C. I believe the dividing line is FR 103 and then it heds back to the NW corner of VC.

Have hunted the muzzle loader hunt in 6A three times. They should still be bugling during the hunt. But with the number of hunters, I would guess they will shut up pretty quick.
