What about the Air Force Academy Hunt

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the hunt they allow on the Air Force Academy. It looks like it requires about 7 preference points, and comes with a lot of restrictions, such as having to be accompanied by an Air Force guide, but with only 10 licenses being issued I thought maybe it might be a place to get a big buck. Any thoughts

I enquired about the hunts up there when I moved to the Springs, I was told that most of the time, you were shown which deer to shoot. You had no say in picking which one. Maybe it has changed since then.

Where or how did you find who to inquire to about this hunt?

You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup. France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'D!ck', and 'Colon.' Need I say more?

Thanks for the tip. Did you ever talk to the people out at the air force base, or was it just kind of through the grapevine. I would hate to waste 8 preference points if it is that kind of a hunt, but on the other hand, I am a single dad living in Castle Rock and rarely have the time to scout and hunt in some of the more remote areas. Something this close would be nice, and even if it is somewhat controlled, I would probably still do it if I had a chance at a real big buck.

I heard it through the grapevine. I am sure there are some big bucks up there. If it was me, I would call information at the base and try to get ahold of the organization on base that administers the hunting on the base and ask them how it works now.

Another option would be to check out hunting on Ft. Carson. I have heard many positive things about hunting on that base.

If I was in your shoes with that many points, I would seriously consider doing an early high country Sept rifle hunt in one of the wilderness areas.

The Ft Carson late hunt has much more potential for a larger buck than the AFA. There are restrictions set on both hunts as to which block of land you can hunt and for how many days. From the few bucks off of both hunts I have seen I heard more positive things about Ft Carson. Good luck to you.

I know last year some NR hunters was shut out on their hunt because some Sgt shut down the hunt because he was leaving for a few days and he was the only guy who could check people in and out, it was a huge deal if I remeber right.

Gator,
Thanks for the info. I read in the brochure that possessing a license doesn't guarantee access. Sounds like that is what happened to that guy. That would really suck, but I am wondering whether it still might be worth the risk if they have some big bucks out there. Again, my dilemma is that I don't have much time to get out and scout/hunt some of the more desirable areas, and Fort Carson is close. I am going to call the base and see what kind of information I can get.

When I was stationed at the AF Academy, you had to purchase this tag at the CO Springs DOW office on a predetermined date. The hunt was for shotguns (slugs-sabots) only and you had to be escorted by a warden. The warden would ensure that your shooting opportunity was safe and ethical. My buddy shot a nice muley during this hunt and it would be a great hunt for someone with little time or beginners.
