Colorado 4th Deer Season

Is the mule deer buck tag for the 4th season new for this year. I don't remember this tag being available last time I hunted Colorado two years ago, and I can't find any draw or preference point information for it on the CDOW web listings. I am looking specifically at Unit 11.

Anybody have any info?

I believe they have had a 4th season for quite some time but only in certain units, this year they added different units for a 4th hunt. So in certain units it is the first time for a 4th.

I gotta believe there are going to be few tags and that it will take a few PP to draw. I thought about it, too, but figured I couldn't draw since I blew my points last year.

It is the first year to have a 4th season in many of the units in the NW corner of the State. So, of course there will be no point information on them. With the 4th season available and point banking it is going to be anybodies guess on what the draw odds will be. But, as mentioned already, it will likely take a point or two to draw a 4th season permit, my guess anyway.

Thanks guys for your thoughts on my question. That helps to clear things up. Best of luck with your draws.

Smokepole,
This will be the first year for many of those units to offer a 4th Season. It's going to be hard to figure out how many points it's going to take to hit on a tag. Most experienced Muley hunters know how Big Bucks come out of their hiding places when the rut kicks in. So I think a lot of people will apply for these new 4th season hunts.
Colorado hasn't had the kind of Bucks that we have now in over 25 years....but with these 4th season hunts, the quality could fade really fast and if it does CDOW will, more then likely do away with many of these hunts and I hope they do, if these 4th season buck hunts start hurting what we have been building over the last decade.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-05-06 AT 11:30PM (MST)[p]In the past they created a 4th season when the buck/doe ratio was 25/100, in that unit for three consecutive years AFTER all huntin seasons. I'm not sure if this is still the case though. i too am concerned this may have an adverse affect on trophy quality. i hope they monitor it well.

With 10 points I took a shot at one of these hunts. 4th season unit 551. Figured it was the lowest profile unit around Gunnison, but I won't draw anyway. I am very interested to see how the applicants get shuffled around due to the NR quota & new hunt changes.
