I am thinking about having a go at building a semi-custom rifle with the help of a local gunsmith. I want something for Black/Grizzly/Brown Bear, Elk, Moose as well as something for african plains game. Which would you guys build on a remington action...(obviously I have a longer rage caliber in mind).

338 RUM
375 RUM
338-378 Wby Mag
8.59 Titan (lazzeroni's 338)

Appreciate your thoughts!

I think the 338 RUM will do it all, and with less recoil than your other choices. No doubt in my mind, I'd get the 338.

your kidding right?
why? its gonna cost you 10 grand! and jam unless you use round nose soft points and still may!
or I am I misunderstand the need of relieable firearms when hunting dangerous game!

I hunt just about everything with my Ultralight .300 Weatherby.
I won the rifle in a raffle.
I shot my Boone & Crockett Kodiak Brown Bear with it, using 200 gr Nosler partitions.
It was dead at the first shot, but emptied the gun into him as insurance.
Even though I had a .375 H&H I just am very confident with the .300 wby. It is a very good long range gun, and can reach out there and put the whuppin on cross canyon critters.
Made an absolutley incredible shot on a blacktail this past year.
If you use only one rifle, you are going to be overgunned on the small stuff, but I still like the flat trajectory of the big guy.
This topic is a can of worms.
You should ask which pickup is best also!

Appreciate all of your opinions! I am leaning towards the 338 or 375 RUM. It is interesting, I have heard a lot concerning how a good handloader can get a lot more out of the 338 RUM as far as velocity, long range performance and accuracy than what Remington claims. I was thinking of having a brake put on it, poossible weatherby's accubrake (if the barrel contour matches or possible a slim-line. In addition to the muzzlebrake I am thinking of putting a brown precision thumbhole stock to soak up som recoil as well. That is what I love abuot rifles, so many combinations and so many opinions! Thank you all and much respect!

I've got a 338 RUM. I did put a brake on it and recoil is no problem. It'll shoot MOA with handloads and I think it is a great all around rifle for what you want. If you want my load data I can look it up.
