Boy what a surprise. Just found out I drew a Manti archery tag for this year. Can't wait for the adventure. I have hunted the Fairview canyon are several times but that is about as far south as I have gone. What is the best way to hunt a big unit like the Manti- it seems you could spread yourself pretty thin trying to cover the whole unit. Anybody offer any advice on whats worked for them in the past? Any areas people would recommend looking to find some bulls? P/M if you would prefer. I am not to picky just happy for the opportunity. thanks for the help

Great Hunt, you only have to contend with the sheep. I had a great hunt and yes pulled a 6x6 down. I hunted around the electric lake area. I have a buddy that hunted last year also and he had a great time lots of elk. If you need more info please let me know. I have 5 years to wait to have an opportunity to draw.Good luck to you! I will be back in the area hunting spikes and cows this year.

Does one end north or south have any advantages over the other? I.e. access, herd size, pressure, etc

Congrats on the tag! You will have a blast! I had the muzzy tag last year. Got into a ton of bulls. I hunted the Fairview Canyon area and didn't have any problem with finding elk. However, I know that part of the unit fairly well. Do some scouting and with a unit as big as the Manti, I would recommend learning a few areas and sticking with them. I only hunted about 3 or 4 canyons my whole hunt. Lots of elk on the Manti. Good luck to you!

There are a lot of good bulls on the Manti. Just put your time in scouting and hope the spike hunters don't screw you up. There are lots of elk on the unit as long as you get off the roads. Someone in my family drew this year, so we will see you up there!! Stop in and chat for a while. We will be camped on baseball flats.

Jet we wont be far from you how are you getting to baseball flats are you coming up 10 mile or down toward Salina? The last few years weve been coming in from the south.

Wow all this talk about the Manti is getting me pumped. After a 7 year wait I also drew the Manti unit for the muzzy season. I had a cow tag in 2004 for the rifle season but only had a short window to hunt in. I hunted the Northern section but the Manti is so big I don't know where to start for a bull tag. I was forced to move from Utah 3 years ago so my access to the unit for scouting is limited (one planed for July) so any help would be appreciated. I'm looking for a 350 class bull which should be doable on the Manti.

One big question on my mind is how in the heck do I decide which one to shoot? I could hunt my way right into tag soop if I'm not carful and get too picky. Is a 350 class bull to high of a goal on the Manti? What can I expect to get there?

We usually come up 12 mile or sometimes Willow Creek. I like to camp on the 12 mile side (better fishing) but will sacrifice the fishing to shoot a good bull. We will be 1/2 mile north of where Beaver Creek runs into the skyline trail.

IMO, the manti is good for a 330 class bull. Once in a while, someone will take a really good one off of there, and there are some good bulls to chase around. I saw some pics on this forum last year of the Hansen brothers guiding someone to a bull that scored 397 on the Manti. If you don't have time to scout, you might want to think about hiring an outfitter. If we drew the archery tag, we will keep an eye out for you. If my wife drew the muzzy tag, then we will send you to the wrong canyon...LOL..

jet I think this year were going to be off blue lake jeep road. Last season it was way too much atving to our spots because were camped down by molly or mary nippple (musina pk)

Thanks for all the help guys. I can't wait to go hike around the area and see whats up there. I am also excited about having the extra week between the end of the spike hunt and the start of the LE rifle hunt. When does the snow generally clear out enough to get up on the Skyline Drive?

I usually get up there for the first time around Memorial Day or the first weekend in June. You should be able to get around the Skyline Drive by then

Finally got the e-mail from the DWR. I drew an archery tag for the Manti big bull elk hunt. Wow, now the work begins. See you guys up there the second week of June and every other weekend after until the opener.

Good luck guy's. The Manti is a lot of fun to hunt! Some great bulls to be had!

Hondo,

If you see a bull that takes your breathe away or makes your heart beat fast, Shoot him. Scores are for sports. Hunting is all about the experience and you will see plenty of 300+ bulls down there. Find a good one and go get him!

Congrats on the tags!!

Thanks for the advice Silentstalker. I think you are right. I sure would hate to spend all that time and money and get too greedy and go home with tag soup.

Dude I think you just missed the cut. You will probably draw next year. Keep your chin up and do some scouting this year in preparation for you draw next year.

When/if I get my bull I will be sure to report it here on MM for everyone to enjoy.

Later, Hondo

Me and my little brother also drew the Manti Muzzy. Didn't think we had a chance with only 3 points but it happened. I'm way excited to hunt up there. Been hunting deer up there for years now finally the elk. My buddy got a nice bull there last year. Good luck to all that drew tags. Will post pics when its on the ground.

I had the early rifle tag back in 2004. It was a great hunt. I ended up killing a decent 340 bull. A buddy of mine drew an expo tag for the early rifle hunt this year, so I will be down there helping him out. I cant wait.

Here is a picture of a bull I shot on the unit a few years ago.
Congrats large unit a lot of bulls.

You picked the best year in 5 to draw the archery tag it ends a week later than last year. Those extra days are huge as far as the rut is concerned. The reason it changes every year is all hunts are scheduled around the regular rifle deer hunt which is always the 2nd to the last saturday of Oct. In years that it starts the 17 of Oct like last year the other hunts all start and end a week earlier. congrats again

Very nice bull NevHeadHntr. I hope I can find one of that caliber. Send me a PM if you are willing to share any information.

Looks like a 360 class bull. What did he score?
