I was wondering if any of you coues hunters use the big docter optic 20x50x80 binocs? there huge and expensive, so before i plunk down that kind of cash i"d like to hear from someone that has some. if there worth the money and the huge size and wieght and what you think of the optics in them...thanks..beardog

I use 30x80 Doctors. I was looking at the ones on Ebay too. The price is good. I use these (30x80) alot and I think they work great. Another option is buying 15x56 Swarovskis and putting two doublers on them. I do this too and you only have to spend about $1700. The variable on the Doctors would work good for evaluating trophies far away. I don't think you will be upset if you go either way. Just my opinion. Rick

Pollohombre: After speaking with you on Jesse's hunting page about using two doublers, I was interested. I have a couple questions like when you put both doublers on, does it reduce your field of view, or is it just like a 30x56 pair of bino's? Is there many draw backs to using two doublers versus a higher power set of bino's? any input specifically into this application would be appreciated. p.s. I told Duwane hello for you and he left yesterday for the Kaibab 1st hunt. Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Here's a question for the board...

30 power binos vs a soptting scope...which is better for field judging game???

I really like the 30x80 Docters but have not had the opportunity to look through the 20-50's. I will tell you this though. The dealer I bought them from said that the variables didn't have near the clarity as the fixed powers and he felt that the 30's were the best between the 30's, 40's and 20-50's. A friend of mine has the 30x80 Docters and the 15x56 Swarovskis with doubler and said the Swarovskis with the doubler didn't quite have as high a magnification as the 30 power docters. He said it was closer to 20 or 25 power. I haven't had the chance to really compare the two, nor have I looked through 40's or 20-50's.

I did write a review on the 30x80's. It's located online here http://www.huntscout.com/ProductReviewsDetails.asp?ID=2 if you would like to read it.

Scott, in answer to your question. Two eyes are better than one. The 30 binoculars over the 30 spotting scope, hands down!

Scott A.

P.S. You should have seen the big Coues with the droptine through the 30x80 Docters. What a view!!

Sniper: have you ever tried the 15x56's with two doublers? I am curious how this would work. If it works good, then I wouldnt need a 30x spotter, I could buy another doubler and use the 15x56's I already have.....Allen......

Bura Nut,
My experience with both is the 30x80 seem to have a better field of view but to me the clarity is the same. You have more options with the 15x56 though. The 30x80 are very heavy and I find unless the country is very thick you can cover alot more area with the 15x when glassing out to about 800yds. When I am glassing at 800+ I find my 30x pick up parts of deer better ie. bedded deer, deer behind trees etc. You can really pick aprt bushes with the 30x. Two experiences come to mind. One was when I was looking at an octillo thicket at about 300yds I saw a black dot in the middle it. I kept watching it and it blinked! With the 15x my friend could not see it. The other time we were glassing a valley from 250 to 800yds away and I was spotting deer looking through several trees. The 15x couldn't do it. I call my 30x80 my truck binos. I usually stay within a half mile or so of my truck with them because of the weight. The 15x56s can be used for all applications mentioned with two doublers. It only takes a minute to put them on or take them off. If you go on a walkabout the 15x56 w/doublers are far easier to pack especially if you bag a deer. Another concern might be money and the swarovskis are cheaper. If you lose anything I think it would be made up with the diversity of the 15x56 w/dbls. I also carry 10x56 with me and they have a tripod mt. too. If I want to cover alot of area quickly I can put them on a tripod. With the field of view they have you can cover alot of country. I have generalized a little and if you have more specific questions I would be happy to answer them. FYI, My friends call me the BinoMan. I have Zeiss,Leica,Swarovski, and Doctor binos. I have tried just about everything. For the money if I did it all over I would have 15x56 w/doublers, 10x42 swarovski, Leica 7x42 rangefinder, Leica 1200 rangefinder, 10x20 either Zeiss or Leica. One more thing to throw at you. I have 15x60 Zeiss and so far just one tripler. If you put another one on it you might really have something.

PW,
go out and sit for 3 to 4 hours behind each. I think you will answer your own question.

I will be in unit 35B if anyone has any questions for the next 5 days. My cell # is 928-640-0091. Just kidding, but I will answer all questions to me when I get back.

Thanks for all the info. I have a cheap pair of 16x pentax binos that i can find deer a long ways away with, but would really like a top end set with more power. the swarows. would be nice cause you can take them to the top of the mountain with you, but the doctors might make the walk to the top unnessesary if you can see theres nothing big enough up there to go after..theres a store hear in utah that has a set of the doctor variabels, but not the sraight 30x i'd really like to compair the 2 side by side...... binocs are they only way to go, i definatly agree thatlookin through a spottin scope sucks after 5 minutes.......thanks again for all the replies...beardog

Rick: I am going to get another doubler, you have convinced me. I love the Swarovski 15x56's and I have a pair of 10x42's. Both have definitely been well worth the investment. I dont have a problem packing the 15x's, they are not that heavy, so now I will carry two doublers with the 15x's. Hope you do well on this early hunt, I go to 36c for the Nov. 8th hunt..... Thanks, Allen......

Allen...are you going to get them for next week?

Also, you have no problem with the extra weight cause I pack all your stuff for ya...you forgot to tell them that part. hehe

Hope this works out for you...if so, then I might follow righ tin line. You haven't led me wrong thus far...
