i'm considering trying to get a leftover deer tag for region c if i don't draw montana again this year. in 2004 we hunted a private ranch west of sheridan. i know public access is the big issue in C, but i did notice that there is state land in the southern and western part of C. has anyone ever hunted it? a lot of it looks fairly accessable.

rifleman,
Where are you planning on hunting in Montana if you draw a tag here? I dont know much about hunting around sheridan other than there were alot of deer splats on the interstate when I drove through there a few years ago. If I was going to hunt in that area Id probally try to find some access to the Bighorns around the Kaycee area. But that is just a shot in the dark.

Your right, public access is a big issue, but it's there. First try and get your hands on maps that show public and private lands in that area. If you do the right research you can find yourself right in the middle of some awesome hunting country that not a lot of people are willing to find and hunt.

Got this guy right between Buffalo and Kaycee a coupla' years ago. My dad missed a possible B&C buck in the exact same spot the very next day. That area definately carries some good animals.

lots of deer around kaycee...lots of private land...some public land west of kaycee that you can walk into only to find a debate about public or private...good luck...happytohunt

My grandpa, brother and I hunted in C last year Where the powder river and I90 cross. I saw 5. A 2x2, a 2x3, and a 27"ish 4x4. Couldnt get close enough for a shot. My brother shot the 2x2 the next day. This all happened on blm and walk in land. Lots of deer. we stayed in buffalo. We drove through the bighorns and there were lots of deer.

ismith,

if i get drawn for montana again, (hopefully i'll know soon) i will be hunting southeast montana near broadus. last year we went 6 for 6 on bucks in the 150-160" range. shot some antelope too. just trying to get a back up plan with wyoming's leftover draw in case i need it. i live in texas and with my job, i only get to go on one long hunting trip every year, otherwise i would put in for lots of states. do you have to have a a guide to hunt the bighorns? i would like to try hunting the public land along the powder river east of buffalo. hunting the powder river in montana last year sure paid off.

rifleman,
Im not sure if you need a guide to hunt the bighorns. I think the public land down around the powder is probally where I start if I was hunting wyoming. Id definately check the bighorns out though.

My family has hunted Region C for the past 5 years. We have had great success. We hunt just outside of Buffalo.

They were all taken on some private property. But each of the private chunks are surrounded by BLM land. It is a good place to hunt and hopefully I will be going there again this year.

Go to any BLM office and get maps. There is plenty of access form the county roads. I recommend go the last week of the hunt. You will avoid the big opening week hunters and I think some the best hunting is after the first four or five days. Good luck.

Buckmstr,
Nice photos that you and your sons killed. Good job!
Did that "Freak Buck" have all of it's male parts? I've seen bucks grow racks like that and they didn't have any gnads.

Your right the buck was missing the jewels. Smooth as a babys bottom down there. We call them a stag buck, not sure if that is the correct terminology or not. I have only seen pictures of bucks like this but this is the first opportunity to harvest one. We actually saw this buck the year before and he had three main beams coming off the side but was alot smaller. I could not get a clean shot that year. Last year we haunted the same canyon and I found him bedded in the sage brush by himself. Made a long stalk and the rest is history. A game warden did stop us when we got to the county road. He said he sees or hears about one being harvested every three or four years. I'm going to have it mounted because it is unique and a trophy to me. Harvesting the freak buck while my son was with me was priceless.

We killed a "stag" buck in full velvet in October in Region C last year. Private land near Wright.
