Field Judging Bulls Pics?

Was wondering if you guys could post up pics of all classes of bulls 6 or more points - just to help with studying up for field judging. Also any tips for not mistaking a 320 bull (at archery range when the adrenaline's flowin) for a 350 and ending the hunt too early?

(I have an archery az bull tag in a good but not premiere unit and am willing to be picky for the first 3-4 days)

Thanks!

I second that request. Need all the practice field judging elk I can get in the next four months.

Being from the Midwest, I'm comfortable field judging whitetails...but elk are a completely different story!

For a hunt like that IMO you need to go purchase a Pope and Young scoring book. I have the B & C book and it has all the North American critters in it and lots of pics. Also, you can go on line and get a score card and fill several of them out. There are lots of field judging threads in MM, so you can do a search too. Good luck!

Well first off I was in the same boat when I drew a trophy unit here in Wyoming. I wathced movies that would show the general score after they shot it. You will know that it is a 320 when the thirds are not long enough. I could tell you numbers but every bull varies. One could have great backs and weak 1's and 2's but be wide enough to throw him in the fifties. Just watch alot of film. In wyoming here it made it easy for me becuase alot of the 300-340 bulls had the cows early in the month. As the hunt went on then I the bigger bulls 350-400 would take over and the others became satelites. I don't know if that is the same thing in your area or not but I hope I helped some. Maybe Mike Eastman has some tips on that I know he has a thing for field judging mule deer that works pretty good. Good luck.

Eastmans had an article on just this topic with pics a year or so ago. Outlined what you are looking for in each class of bull. You could send them and email and probably get a copy.

The boone and crocket article by Mark Stevens has a nice statement that puts a lot of this in perpective.

"The total of both the beam lengths
can easily exceed 100 points,
and on a ?record-class? bull,
will surely exceed 90 points, so
it is worth close to 25% of the total score
on a big bull. Do the math. That means tine
length accounts for at least 40% of the total,
sometimes more, but rarely less."

That means width and mass account for about 35% combined. In most cases take care of the main beam and the tine length and the rest will take care of itself.

I read that whole article and will probably re-read it 5 more times just to let it sink in. I'm not too concerned on scores, but have goals - these tags to come around too often. Scouting should also set some expectations for me as well.

Andy, I don't think I could pass on that bull either...

That bull looks a lot like Bowhunt's to me but hard to tell how wide. I'll guess somewhere around 360 +/-...I could be way off. (which is why I made the post!)

Bowhunt that's really an awesome bull. Congrats.

Sometimes its not totally about the B&C score. shoot them if they are big.

389 official B&C gross

Here is another archery bull. They all look big when they are less than 50 yards and you only have a few seconds to decide. Congrats on the tag. Warning rut elk hunting can be habit forming

He was estimated in the 390-400 range. He was a huge bodied bull.
They tried to get him in the later trophy hunts but he had broken off the entire beam above the 2nd brow tine on one side.
Maybe they can get him this year.
I have more pictures but they are a little fuzzy. they were taken thru the binocs on a tripod.

LAST EDITED ON May-04-10 AT 11:15AM (MST)[p]I was way off but I know wouldn't have passed on him so to go from 360 to 390 would be an awesome scoring "mistake" to make. Awesome bull NEB good luck getting him this year.

NevHeadHntr that's a great bull. I grew up hunting in WY but since moving to AZ I've only had 2 elk tags so I don't get out as often. But I agree there's nothing more fun.

My quick "eyeball" on a bull...Lots of variables of course..

This is a 2 second look at a bull and you need to make a decision.

Decent spread and mass assumed.

If all tines are about 13"...@330
14"...@340
15"...@350
16"...@360
17"...@370
18"...@380 (nose is about 18" and always the first tine I look at)
19-20"...Shoot really fast.

Of course this is a generalization and there are a lot of variables, but it will at least get you in the ball park.

Good luck.

He would score at 370 +/- if symetric and 36" spread. The picture doesn't show the 4th and 5th well. 4th was 21".
Needless to say, He lost a lot of points on the right.

LAST EDITED ON May-05-10 AT 05:51PM (MST)[p]The bull on the left scores 344 and the other scores 400 net 416 gross. Thanks backwoodsguides.com

If he looks big shoot. Don't hunt a score if you like the way a bull looks shoot him. I have killed a 348 and few 300's and been happy with all them
