I have some 140 grain CT accubond winchester factory loads that shoot well out of my Savage 110. I was thinking they might work good on elk. If I use them for elk I probably won't be shooting beyond 300 yds and will only take behind the shoulder or dead center chest shots.

I'm looking for comments/pics/bullet performance of folks who have used 140 grain accubonds out of a 270 win for elk.

Thanks a bunch!

130 grain bullets out of a 270 work great! I dont think you could go wrong using the 140's.

Friends, Family, and I have killed alot of elk with the 130's out of a 270.

You find out who your friends are when you see who shows up to help pack your bull out!

Switched to this bullet three years ago in our handloads. Worked very well on cows we've taken.

That's a great load. I loaded that exact load for my son for elk. He shot a 5 point at 336 yds, dropping him in his tracks. I'm totally sold on the accubond.

You have not given that caliber the respect that it does deserve. I work in a gun store part time and have worked in the buisness for about 18years. I am a huge 270 fan. I currently use the Berger 140 VLD, but before that I used the Accubond. More often than not it is the "nut behind the wheel" that can't shoot that give Magnumitis more credit. Go out and shoot cow bones, newspaper or whatever you want at various distances and it will make you a believer. Remember that this is a High Powered Rifle. The damage that is delivered to an animal is amazing compared to a muzz or a bow, but isn't it funny that folks take these ELK sized animals with a muzz @200yards plus, I have. And not bashing on bow hunters but they take these animals throwing sticks with razor blades atached to them and kill Elk every year, great! I have a Super Mag also but I will never hesitate shooting my 270. SHOT PLACEMENT is everything. Just food for thought, figure this out. How many folks have shot a animal and lost it? alot right. Sure they have, it happens. Have you ever shot something and got up to it and found that your shot was not as good or not hit where you thought? Sure, you can only guess untill you have the animal down and you can see for yourself. So my big question that was first how many animals that got away the hunter knew exactly where they hit? Right! They dont know for sure do they. But that will be there explanation that the bullet blew up or galnced off the shoulder, etc. You get the point. Ther is an excuse for everything. I am not saying that bullets wont fail, sure they can. But if the failed all the time why would they keep selling if they didnt work. It is personell preference. Same as Dodge, Chevy, Ford, Toyota. Everyone who had a bad experience with one hates them for life, same with bullets. Accubonds are incredible bullets.

I think that if you are comfortable with the rifle and it and you shoot well. There is nothing that should stand in your way. Just remember shot placement, the animal deserves that. So if you dont have a good shoot wait. My family has taken alot of elk with the 270, with no trouble, shoot straight and you wont either. Great choice!!!! Good luck to you.

Thanks for your comments. I've been looking for a bullet that will expand well on antelope and deer yet be tough enough to punch through the heavier bone and muscle of an elk. Seems like the 140 accubond should fit the bill with slightly better ballistics than a NP.

I shot a smaller cow last year with that bullet in my 270, behind the shoulder broadside at about 330 yards. She went about 30 yards.

It's all about bullet placement. I had a buddy ask me the same question the other day; "Do you think a .270WSM is a big enough caliber to kill an elk?" My response was, "I think a .22LR is a big enough caliber to kill an elk if you hit it in the right place!"

I think if you are confident in your abilities, 140Gr. Accubond would do the job on an elk with no problem.
