Colorado Unit 40

Hope you are in shape! From what I hear, the better bulls on public are down in Hell hole canyons that you can't even get horses into.

Get some good maps. Find the BLM access. Get your loooong hike on and you will kill a good bull. I know people who have. Don't be afraid to walk.

Since I live close I've scouted a couple of routes in from Unaweep Canyon while thinking of putting in for it. Very steep climbs to get up and in from the few public access points that touch the highway on the south side. The landowners pay horseback riders to patrol the boundary lines and will give you grief even when they see you on public land. One rider wouldn't believe I'd hiked in from the south side.

As others have mentioned, look at access through the BLM land in the south and west up to the tops and near the private land. The hike might be a 2000+ feet very steep climb which will keep most people away so you should be able to find some solitude and animals.

Hike into that country and from the Gateway highway and blow those patrol riders out of the saddle. They don't have the right to scare you off public land after you've sacrificed to get there. There's big bucks and bulls in those canyons and hillsides.........screw the landowners. Stay on the public, have a blast, and blow away the selfish landowners patrolers.

LAST EDITED ON May-28-10 AT 10:03AM (MST)[p]I did explain to the rider that what he was doing was illegal and that if he got off his horse I would duck walk him down to the highway and take him to the Sheriffs office. As far as killing another man over something like that I don't believe it would be worth it. As usual Two Dogs, you are an idiot

I have all the maps and will send them to you for free if ya want them.

I hunter 40--- 3 years in a row------bow bull--then rifle 1st season on my Mrs bull tag---then mzzy bull with a bud from Cali.... not a single tag filled.....

Plenty of other tag holders around to help ya pack out if ya luck into a harvest.

2pups........you are simply ANAL.....

No I'm not. Guts on the ground is all these people will ever
understand. I'm a law abiding, hard-working American......and I expect the same from landowners. Only some believe they are above all others. They ain't. Personally, I won't be run off public land in this country. Never.

I lived in Nevada when Claude was a hero back in the 1980's. He had MANY followers, believe me. In fact, ya didn't be outspoken against him in a bar in Winnemucca.

I'm not talkin' about poaching bobcats and shootin' wardens.......I'm talking about bullying Americans off public lands. Every one of you that lets this happen is just making it harder for the next guy. And don't expect any help from the local sheriff's department.........as those useless greaseballs are only in it for their pensions......not for what's right in America.

A buddy had the same tag a few years ago and the storys are true about the patrol riders, One actually threatened my buddy he said he would rope him and drag him off the mountain, My buddy clicked off the safty and told him to grab his rope after that encounter he didn't have too much trouble with any of them, they knew he was serious and knew where he was and that push come to shove he would defend himself. He had several encounters with nice bulls but was holding out for the big one and ended up going home empty handed but is putting in for the same tag again.

Good luck another buddy drew the same tag this year so I might see ya out there.

I got your PM. Thanks to all for the information. The landowner and public access confrontations seem to be a very common occurance in this unit.

I'm not sure if you've ever seen this in 40 but on opening day of elk season a few years ago there was a "cattle drive" to bring all the "cattle" back up to a ranch. Do you think it was a coincidense that they moved cattle on opening day of elk season?
