Hi everyone- I'm looking for advice, or even better a photo tutorial if any of you know of one, on how to cut the skull on an elk for a skull mount. I've never done it, but see lots of photos of people who have done it in the field. I finally have a limited entry Utah tag and with luck will be doing a skull plate mount. Thanks for your help!! Jon

Just keep it intact and boil it. Make european mount then you can cut it or have it as a european mount until your cape comes back.

Take your knife and cut the skin between its ears down its cheeks to its eyes and across its forehead between his eyes. Put its nose in the dirt and cut straight down giving yourself some room (about an inch) betweeen the saw and the antlers. Cut down to his eyes. Lay it down and cut straight down into the center of the eyes to your other cut and they should come right off leaving enough skull plate for it to not break.

You find out who your friends are when you see who shows up to help pack your bull out!

Whatever you do dont boil it, it will shrink it alot more than having it beetled, but i agree, to take it out whole and have a euro done while waiting for it to be tanned, or saving up enough to get it mounted. Im cheap when it comes to euros on elk and can do a pretty big elk 330-340's with no problem. So keep me in mind when you get it. Robert

That's how I do it, too.

Oh you need to think bigger. You have the wasatch right. I still think you can get a great bull so dont be thinking about doing just a scull cap mount. You need to be thinking shoulder mount. Think BIG and put your time in and you can do it.

Thanks for the encouragement FHMAN13. I will consider the shoulder mount, although the wife is not really in favor of the idea. It is not in any way discouraging me from going full bore on the hunt, however. I am fully committed to the idea of taking a 300"+ bull with my trusty recurve. In fact, I started scouting today while I was fishing at Current Creek reservoir. I am pumped up to do this the hard way and come out with a memory to last a lifetime!!. My goal is to have a lasting memory of rising to a challenge and making something great happen. I appreciate your supportive thoughts. Jon
