Gas prices affect on hunting

Will gas prices headed for $3.00 per gallon or higher affect where any of you might venture (or not) this fall? I'm thinking one deer tag in my home state may be enough for this year.

In Nov last year diesel was 2.99 all the way from Reno to Colorado. I'm paying 3.09 now, whats the difference? If you add up all the other costs, gas is just a small part of the cost. Getting 3 horses shod, health certificates, Cogins tests and weed free feed cost more than gas usually. At least I know I won't be roadhuntin.

Not much. My truck gets 13 mpg so a 700 mile round trip to Utah is around 54 gallons. I have to think that $54.00 to $108.00 swing on gas from $2.00 to $4.00 a gallon isn't going to stop a weeklong vacation to hunt deer for most hunters.

It's the everyday driving that adds up and blows the budget when it comes to higher gas prices.

The only 'good thought' for me is that I bow hunt so my hunts will be 'cheaper' in Aug./Sept. at about $4.50 a gallon than the Oct/Nov. rifle hunts when it hits $5.00 or more a gallon....

I live about a half mile from my deer hunting and 7 miles from my elk. So that would be a no, gas prices won't affect my hunting. Of coursw I won't draw that moose tag anyway, if I do get lucky and draw Desert Bighorn it is only 30 miles away.

I don't think it will effect me much........but I sure will complain more!!! Hunting is priceless, I NEED to hunt......therefore I will have to pay whatever. :)

I'm with you Lien2. My desire to hunt will overcome any and all obstacles. Riding a bike now will help my conditioning anyway! Good luck in the draws everyone!

We are going to Colorado this year so it will hurt the pocketbook, but we will go anyway.

For me it'll mean less scouting trips, and when I do go, more hiking and less driving around checking out new country. Instead of going hunting/scouting for 2 or 3 days at a time, I'll go for a week, and get it all done at once. Just means less driving back and forth. Also, I'll try to always take along a hunting partner, ot two, to split the gas with.

My family is getting burned out on wild meat and its becoming more expensive to go. I'll probably tag along with some friends because I love to hunt, but I'm not even sure if I'm going to buy a tag this year. Can't see spending more money on hunting if we need a break from venison. Leave a slot open for someone who will use the meat.

Ditto huntnut64. My whitie hunting is 400 miles away, but if the cost of fuel gets too high I will stick to blacktails within a couple of miles of my place. My usual elk hunting areas are less than 2 hours away, so that isnt much of a factor. I also have one hell of a herd that lives less than 1/2 mile away. I hate to shoot my "pets", but if the fuel prices are too much, I might fling an arrow at the 6x6 that has been (along with his friends) tearing up my neighbor's hay fields. What I am not looking forward to is running my boat up to Canada this summer. 10 gallons per hour and I am looking at at least 40-50 hours of running time. Marine diesel is 10-20 cents per gallon cheaper than regular diesel, but it still adds up pretty quickly!

I told my wife, "only two trips to the Mall a day!" I figure that will save 1200 gallons of gas for hunting season! I should be OK!

I told my wife she has to take the bus. And then she said I'll get the divorce papers ready!!

"effect on hunting" = none on mine!

I'll be driving about six and a half hours this weekend just to go turkey hunting. I'll most likely drop a hundred and a half in gas. Toyota Tacoma with the 2.7 four banger! Hold on to your neck! The sad reality is that everything is only getting more expensive every year, especially gas prices. What does a guy do though? Cant stop hunting.

I usually drive 4 hours to hunt with family in eastern washington but if diesel is around 4 dollars i will probably just hunt here around home in yakima which is just as good.
Diesel was 3.07 at 5pm yesterday at shell station and at 8:30 when i drove by last night it was 3.28. What a joke.

April 30-$3.09 a gallon, May 2-$3.19 a gallon, May 3-$3.29 a gallon in NE Kali. I think I got over on them on the 2nd though. The posted price was $3.19 but the pump said $3.13. I figured they hadn't updated their computer yet. Probably the last time in a while I get DEAL like that.

I'm thinking with the practice they're getting, they'll have the updating of their computer dialed real soon.
