My father and I were unsuccesful in the Montana deer drawing, however I am #1 and he is #19 on the alternate's list... looks like we should get tags! We have never hunted muleys, or out west at all before... I am doing my research and trying to educate myself before the trip.... Can anyone offer advice or commnents on the muleys in this general area? We will be on a private ranch, just east of Roundup near the Musselshell River... We are on a 6 day hunt and I hope to also take a pronghorn (if I get a tag) and do some small game hunting if succesusful with the mule deer, but mule deer is my priority! What general size deer should I hold out for? Hunting methods? Typical weather for late Oct/early Nov? Any hints on muley behavior? Will they stop to look back at you typically? I assume this area is mostly sagebrush and rolling hills... I plan on bringing my .264, Dad will shoot a 7mm.. we will also have rangefinders, spotting scopes, etc... Any help or advice would be sincerely appreciated! THANKS!!!!

My first mule deer hunt with another Wisconsin buddy was near Roundup Montana. Killed a 25 inch 4X4 and was so happy with it. My buddy killed a non-typical 8X6 that I covet to this day. Open sagebrush country with lots of relief features and some timber would describe the area we hunted. I don't think the 35inch bucks are common but a respectable, 25+ inch buck with some mass should be obtainable. Nothing like dreaming and schemeing.

I've hunted near there up in winnett. Had a great time and seen lot's of deer and elk and lopes. We were there the week of thanksgiving and had really warm weather right up to the day before thanksgiving. I know its northeast of roudup but we drove thru roundup and saw plenty of game just along the highway.
You'll have a awesome time for sure.

How far East of Roundup? How much Mussellshell River bottom will you have access too? Are you on an outfiter sponsored license or a landowner-sponsored? During the early part of the season or after November 15th? Are you in the Bull Mountain timber? Driving out? Bringing dogs for pheasants? Decoys for honkers? I have hunted the area since 1983.

How much pressure has the ranch had? Lots of questions to better help me help you. I'll be in the Melstone area due ast the week before Thanksgiving.
