Finding Muleys-help

I need help! I have been coming to this site for two years or so and have gotten all kinds of good tips. Whitetail hunted for 5-6 years. Then started elk hunting two years ago. So far...gotten drawn twice and killed two bulls. It might not have even happened if it were not for the help I got on this site and reading alot. So thank you everyone. Now after checking out how incredible Mule deer can be, I am hooked. Unreal Racks! I hope to be drawn here in New Mexico for muleys this year. I have only Mule deer hunted once! Got a OTC bow tag three years ago because my buddy had seen some monsters he saw while antelope hunting. He took me up the day before the season opened and we got on 'em right away. I could not believe how big they were. Needless to say, I only hunted a few days and never saw a deer with my bow in hand. If I could do it all over again I would hunt those bucks every day that I could. Deer numbers are fairly low, but I have seen some nice deer. So how do you increase the number of deer you see. Where do you look? Water? Open? Ridges? Timber? I always hear glass, glass and glass some more. That I can do. What type of terrain would you look if the unit you were hunting had most of these features. I really want to do it right if I get drawn and I can't wait to get up there to scout. Any ideas/ hints will be appreciated. Thanks!

My advice to you would be to go scout it out and see. Try to find trails and they like using saddles. Look for tracks to see where they are coming and going.Hard to give advice if we dont know the terrain.
In my area's I like scouting when it is windy out as they will be bedded up out of the wind and the deer will most likely be with there backs to the wind. Not calm days as they can be anywhere. Wind blowing out of the west they will be on east sides of hills. I glass from the east and find all the deer there.
Glassing is the easy part. Just got to know what to look for. Alot of people overlook bedded deer. Some people do not have the eye for finding deer bedded. Or even standing on the hillside. Just go out and look over some area's you want to hunt. Easiest way to find them and get aquainted with them.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Supersider. I applied for deer in the same unit I have elk hunted for the last two years, so I know alot of the terrain pretty well. It is a big unit however and there is a good deal of open country that I have not really spent the time glassing. I'm usually up there scouting for elk and I try to get up alot higher in elevation and in the timber. Good tip about the wind. We have alot of it in New Mexico, so that shouldn't be a problem. I have heard that they stay out of the thick stuff when they are in velvet because their antlers are sensitive. And also that they will stay up really high on ridges in the summer to keep the flies off of them. I guess I haven't scouted for muleys long enough to figure out their pattern, but I'll be looking this summer.

outta,

have u try the Bighorn Peak? there are loads of deer! I shot my there few years back! 4 out of 4 tagged first day on same area in that mountain! that unit is big for deer to find! elk are easy!

I like to hunt border of Colo and NM!! Scout as much as you can and find where they hang! they like to stay in thick stuff after Velvet rubbin! when i bowhunt there, i like to hunt near west of Chico dry lake! there are big bucks! didn't had a shot! that was few years i have been up there to bowhunt since its OTC! now i hunt different units for deer!

I put that unit for muzzle antelope and elk this year so hope this year is my luck! i ll be up there after the draw! but ll be fishin at Los Pinos River!

Hey Vinihunt,

When you typed in "Los Pinos River" I knew I had seen that name b4. Right there on the border btwn 75/751. I'm hoping to draw and come all the way down from Alaska to hunt some Muleys during 3rd season this year. I may have to ask you some questions regarding this area (if I draw.)

I'm currently getting ready to try for my first Brownie here in Alaska. We're going next week and it's prime time. Been a resident for 33+ years and never bagged one.

I thought most of that land on the border btwn CO and NM was indian reservation.

Thanks man! I put in for muzzy antelope also. I guess the draw odds are tough, but you can't go if you don't apply. I'll be up there after the draw also. I'll definitely see ya at some point up there. Have you ever hiked down into the Cruces Basin and fished? There are some nice brookies down there.
