My brother drew this muzzleloader tag, does anyone have any starting points for scouting.

Get every map you can and learn the unit PRIOR to the season. If you are willing to walk you will do just fine with reasonable expectations.

From what I've heard, be sure to know where you are on that unit. Lot's of private land with people that patrol the boundaries. Have good maps that show ownership and don't be afraid to question someone about it. I've heard intimidation is used out that way. Good luck!

Hunted it a few years ago held out most of the season. My uncle drew a rifle tag first season with no points. He said he wouldn't waste the money on the tag again. If you are not hunting private you can hold out for a 5 point. We ended up killing a small rag horn after a few weekends and covering most of the unit.

Good luck

I had the archery tag 2 years ago and killed a 320 6 point on the second day. I saw a lot of bulls leading up to the hunt. 300 class was the norm with lots of slightly smaller bulls. I did find 3 bulls that were running together that were alot bigger then mine. The private property was not a problem. Most of the tops of the mountains is public so don't wound one and let them get low. I found bulls everywhere I looked except the real deserty terrain. Get a map from vernal showing the private land up there. I had a friend pick me up one so I knew where I could hunt.

Yo Bucks and Ducks,

I drew this archery tag for this year.. I was out there 2 weeks ago to look around.. Had the map, but any additional info would be great..
You can pm me here or email [email protected]
Thanks in advance....

I need to get my map from a friend this weekend then I can give names of canyons. I would definately get a hold of Vernal city to buy the map that shows the private property up there. I think they can mail it to you. If you have never been up there it is subdivide into small cabin lots and also a few big chunks that a outfitter runs hunts on called 2 dog hunts, I think. Check out there website for pictures of the deer and elk they have been killing.

Drew this tag 2 seasons ago, Muzzy hunt is by far the best on that unit, my advice, hunt hard, cover lots of country, I went into the hunt just expecting to have a good time, I did not set my expectations to high, Just wanted a crack a a 300 plus 6x6, This was one of the funnest hunts I have ever been on. Seen several good bulls, had a chance a small six right of the bat, i was glad I missed it. day 3 I found a nice group of elk screaming there heads off, Hunted them for 2 days, slipped in on a decent 6 and nailed him at 150 yds. Ended up at 342, seen 2 other bulls just off the public ground that I couldn't pursade to come to my calls, both 350 plus bulls. It was a hunt to remember, Plus you have the bonus of watching some nice bucks, seen bull moose, and some great fishing. Best of luck, the hunt is what you make of it!

Hunted this unit several times. You do need to watch the private vs. the public lands. Dave Chivers has actually locked chain around gates on the "state school trust land before. What you have read in this post is true. You can find good deer and elk, but be careful for the private stuff. Also beware, that these guys will post everything. Even 2dog hunting has posted property that he is not leasing. Get the map. Do alot of scouting. And you will find success. Here are some PICS.
PS-if anyone is looking for a landowner buck deer tag, I have one for next year 2011 season. $4,000.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-10 AT 04:20PM (MST)[p]Hmm... the 2nd pic looks like it's on the wrong side of the road to be Diamond Mtn. Maybe I'm seeing it wrong though.

Your seeing it right. Right on the edge of the rim. When the diamond rd hits the top(searles Place), the boundry splits off the road once you hit the top, then follows the rim. The photo was taken on the edge of the rim, the buck was shot in the CRP's on private property. Just to save you on another post,"I had permission too".

did you shoot it with a legal muzzy?
"Here's your sign" LOL I know you was just asking a question it how it came out.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

That 4th pic looks really close to a house. You sure you weren't in your house when you pulled the trigger?

No doubt...
I wished it was that easy.
I spent 11 days crawling in sagebrush trying to get a shot at that buck. Finally on day 11, I had an open hell marry shot. You know, one of those 90+ yard FMP(full moon pussies) shots. It was a very challenging hunt. (FUN< FUN<)
Wait a minute, can I say pussi on this web site?
