Drew a unit 34 2nd archery tag!! This is going to be my first elk hunt. I have hunted MT for mulies plenty but have never hunted elk can't wait!!

Headed to scout in Aug. any helpful advice for a beginner?

One question i had is if i find some elk in Aug can i expect them to be in the same area the second week of Sept.?
I am a whitetail hunter and when they hit the rut they maybe miles from where there home ground is.

thanks

You don't need to scout 34 unless you want to burn gas.

My suggestion is to get there on the 10th and stay for 2 weeks.

LOL

I know it didn't sound like much but it's pretty much the truth. The Elk will move a little from year to year, one or 2 drainages over is about all. And that's for the heavy concentrations.

Most of the Elk will be in the center of the unit, BlueWater, etc and most of the pressure will be there too. Get there early, spend one day driving around to different spots you picked out. Then take your calls and see where you want to hunt.
You do not need to be 2 miles from a road.

Last year bugles and raking worked, Cow calls did nothing.
The last 3 years I have hunted there they bugled from day one and never quit.

Advance the learning curve by getting all the elknut dvds and drive your family crazy studying them until you leave.
