If its a redundant question, sorry. Hope its not, but I need to ask because I now have the cash.

What is the absolute best, top of the line, could not possible be outclassed, light-weight hunting rifle?

The cash is finally in the bank and I can buy anything up to $2,000. I want to know what your experience is, for those who have bought the lighter guns. Im looking for excellence in product.

I've got asthma and have to keep my pack weight to bare minimum when we're up in the mountains. What model gun would you have me buy?

LAST EDITED ON May-15-06 AT 06:12AM (MST)[p]If it were me I would buy a 270 Weatherby mag in Stainless with a thumbhole composite stock and top it with a 6x Zeiss. The rifle isn't as important as the optics. IMHO.

Thats just it, I do plan to put top optics on the gun but I still think the gun weight will be a big factor. Does Weatherby carry an ultralight line in the .270 Magnum?

Dave

Christensen Arm's Carbon One Hunter. If you are looking for a light weight rifle, each one I've ever looked at seemed to be pretty light weight compared to my Remington 30.06.

You'd want to order now, especially since they are 3 months out on there orders.

Hadnt thought about time to get one after ordering. We dont leave for Idaho until October 17th, but I need to go more quickly I suppose. Choose as fast as I can. Hoping to hear more from all of you on what you recommend.

look at the weatherby ultra lights in a standard caliber. They are about 5 3/4 pounds. The two I have shot were both shooters.

weatherby .257 mag ultra light with leupold LPS 2.5 x10!
bout $2300.00.

I'd go with an HS precision or the already mentioned carbon from Christensen Arms. Both are great.

You asked for the "best" lightweight rifle, hands down, then stipulated a price of $2000+/- which really limits your options. While you can't go wrong with HS Precsion or Christianson Arms there are lots of others that are as good or better. Rifles Inc., Sisk, Brown Precision, Jarret, Banser, are several but price is 4-9000.

I concur! Get one in .270 win and your set! And thats with a 24" barrel, and still way lighter than the standard rifles with the 22".

i may have missed it but i was wondering what youre wanting to hunt with this rifle... i was looking at the remington titanium and it was extremely light rifle... i would stick a zeiss conquest in a 3.5 x 10 x 44 or something like that ,,,,cbyrant

I would by a Tikka T3 lite in 270WSM or 300WSM,and put the rest of the $2000 towards a good pair of swarovski's.

I have a Tikka T3 in 270 WSM - syn stock and SS and it shoots very well with handloads. I intended to buy one of the ultralights as mentioned above and decided for the extra 6 ozs spending $1200 to $1500 wasn't worth it. I did hang hang good glass on it though.

You're pleased to the point that you would not trade in your Tikka T3 for a different, more expensive gun later down the road?

Cactus

You cant go wrong with the Tikka in .270. Light and very accurate, a killer for sure. I topped mine with a 4-14 VXIII.

I think that the Tikka T3 lite is about as good as you can get for the money. For less than $600 you get a lightweight rifle with a floated barrel, easily adjustable trigger and a SUPER SMOOTH action. When I bought mine (270WSM) I loaded for it and just about every load I fed it I had groups under 1". I settled on a load that produces 3/4" groups.

You can spend as much as you want for a high end rifle but in the end it's not going to make a deer or elk any more dead.

I agree with much already said. There are LOTS of great custom rifles available and I will own at least one just because I like them. I have the Tika and can say it is at the top of the heap for factory rifles. I too put a Leupold VX-III on it and it is only limited by the operator.

Anyone want to ring in on the Kimber Montana model? I called Cabela's last night and talked with their "expert". He recommended the Kimber, but he also seemed to be attempting to drive me towards guns he had in stock. No one has mentioned Kimber so I wanted to ask what you all thought.

Anyone have one?

Cactus

I think the Kimber is by far the best rifle for the money. if you want to spend a lttle over your $2000 go for a Rifles Inc Strata, if you want to spend a lot more go with the Bansner Sheep Hunter, the best you can buy in my opinion.

I am 100% with BuckSnort on this one. the T3 is a essentially a SAKO. It's got a sako action cause it was a sako until they sold out. . .

I have the T3 lite in the 300 wsm. It's been a great gun. It drove holes in paper at <1" right out of the box!

Litterally - I've told this story before but it's true.

had the gunshop put it together, took it to the range (this was just when they came out and you could hardly handle one let alone find a place that would sell you one) and shot it out to 300 yards. It was dead on still at 300 so I left it alone and have for the past two and a half years left it alone. Last years buck was shot at 420 yards right where I put it, and the year before just under 400, again right where I put it.

It's light and it's durrable.

I will tell you that if it gets wet and stays wet for days like on a backpack hunt, the trigger will get some surface rust but it's not a issue for me, it's a tool and it kicks-ars! The clips are a little spendy (buy an extra or you will lose the only one it comes with) and they rattle when full of shells, so I built a little wedge for the spare clip to keep the shels from rattling while it's in my pocket. For the money I'd go with the TIKKA t3 and spend the remainder on glass, shells and an eberlestock just one pack to carry it arround in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANOTHER FINE LESS $$$$ RIFLE IS WINCHESTER COYOTE LITE..
