Utah Conservation Projects

Do you know of any Utah conservation projects to improve deer habitat in your neck of the woods the last 10 years, especially ones that you know were funded by monies raised from the selling of conservation tags?

You guys must never get south of Santaquin if you can't think of any projects. Henry Mt. reseeding, dixie harrowing south of Koosharem and on the Fishlake, brush hog work on the Paunsagaunt, control burns on Fishlake and Dixie Forests and I'm sure there are more. Lets see how about the sheep transplants???

I personally have worked on a few projects in the southern region through the DH program that have improved habitat. Guzzler projects, P&J thinning, protecting sources of springs, etc. I don't know if the money for supplies came from conservation tags or not. I also noticed the deer crossings put in along I-15 between Beaver and I-70. I also saw sage brush rehabilitation projects between Beaver and SR 20. Look on the DWR website. I am sure they can't wait to talk about all the ongoing projects in the different regions.

LAST EDITED ON May-15-06 AT 09:01PM (MST)[p]Attend the next MDF banquet... they will tell you all about the projects and dee... err... uhh.. Elk herds in Utah. You know, just like they did here in Ogden (last MDF banquet I will ever attend). Heard all about the Elk since it was a "hot topic" and nothing about projects or even mule deer. Still swear my ticket said RMEF!

Someone else can have my money.. maybe the Wyoming NRA or something? I end up chasing all of the deer in Wyoming all the time anyway! :)

Ok guys I must say this is pretty pathetic. For all of the hundreds of people that may have read this post I sure would of thought there'd be a whole lot more!

I must admit that I haven't stumbled onto a whole lot, but then again I don't spend much time on the Henries or Pauns;).

I've been part of a few dedicated hunter projects, but I don't think there was much conservation $$$ there.

So how about it??? Is the lack of response due to not educating the hunting public on projects?

Or, are there just not that many projects occuring where the average joe Utah hunter spends his time in the outdoors?

How about some pics of projects? How about some signage in areas where projects have occured that let us know the projects were paid for inpart by conservation tag monies?

>Or, are there just not that

Bingo! Give that man a cookie!

""Or, are there just not that many projects occuring where the average joe Utah hunter spends his time in the outdoors?""

Roger that!! and toss him a second cookie!

So when DH guys are on a project do they get paid....?

Or is it free labor but 'estimated' that it would cost x amount to pay them and that is 'added' into the cost we see??

Now that it has been shown that we can not see many things going on, how about making a change.

For everyone that is complaining, those who can not see anything being done, and those who want more.. GET INVOLVED.

We know that there is plenty of money from the conservation tags sales. It has been shown right here on MM.

Develop a project you think will make a difference. I believe that on the MDF Website there is a form that can be used as a sample of the things that need to be addressed to consider a project.

Get the project idea before MDF, SFW, RMEF, DWR & BLM. If you do not want to go through all that work... just go to the BLM or DWR and ask them what they are working.. They have a big list of things they want to do but do not have the money or manpower. They are always willing to let any group get credit for doing a project by just simply getting involved with them.

So here is everyone?s chance to make a difference. Do not let the Wildlife in Utah down.

Paul, I sent you a PM.

Some dedicated hunters get paid. I know of a few that have recieved funds for what they did.
Also I just got an email looking for helpers for the dedicated hunter program 9.00 something an hour. The DWR says they cant pay to hire out someone to keep track of monies that the big 5 spend and make. But then they offer a job for the dedicated hunter program.

As far as I'm concerned SFW is mostly using consevation money to improve hunting on Limited Entry Units where the average guy will never get to hunt. I see very little being done to help general season areas.

cabinfever here's your chance to change that. Come up with somethng on the General Public area's you think needs improving.

Take that idea to the MDF. They have lots of money to spend based on the amount they say the have raised.

I believe that most hunters in the state and this web sight just like to complain. People know that the non profit groups are getting a few bucks to help out the deer herds in Utah. These few dollars are seen as a magic wand when waived poof there are 30" bucks around every aspen stand. Guys this is not going to happen. People need to get involved along with dollars. Then after the improvements are made perhaps our children will be able to enjoy the hard work that we put in to make a difference. This includes everybody if this is truly important to you get away from the monitor and get in the field.
How many dedicated hunters actually do their hours to benefit mule deer?m I have organized a tree cutting party at Rabbit Gulch at least 6 times in the past 4 years. We even raffled off guns three of the outings. typically we get zero to twenty people that show up. Most of these people are only there because they have to do a project and have run out of options before the deer season starts. Very few of the people are there strictly to make a difference, and not looking for dedicated hunter hours. Two of the outings up there whoever I could talk into coming, and provide Taxi service showed up Myself and two other friends. Now after hearing wherer I come from Every body can sit back while at their place of employment type a post of how nothing is getting done. Don't foget to waive your magic wand so that there are BC bucks in every canyon. Now I challenge every one of you to help. Join one of these non profit groups get on a committee, and make a difference for everyone in the future,
Jeremy

LAST EDITED ON May-18-06 AT 09:41PM (MST)[p]Jeremy,

Thanks for your efforts. Rabbit Gulch is one of the few projects that I'm aware of in this area. I know several people that have spent time out there on their own cutting trees at different times for dedicated hunter hours. I'm not sure I'd agree that they weren't out there to make a difference as you put it.

It's human nature to need an adcentive to do something. Just look at some of the money being made by conservation group individuals. I'm not saying it's wrong it's just the way it is.

One of the most worthwhile projects I was involved with for dedicated hunter hours was planting trees along the Provo River restoration project just as your coming down from Jordanelle on HWY 40. Didn't have much to do with mule deer, but it sure is neat to watch the trees grow that I helped plant. At the time I'm not sure I was there to make a difference, but in retrospect it's neat to see that it has. I think that's one of the best things about service, it may take years to realize the benefit (for yourself).

To paint a broad picture about those of us asking about projects isn't very fair. I've happily donated time, service, and money in a lot of places and to a lot of groups. I plan on continuing to do so even if I don't agree with everything that is going on.

I imagine that many of those that have also posted have done likewise.

I don't recall a mention of magic wands and 30" bucks in every canyon, but I'm not sure when expecting more and dreaming big became a bad thing?

Curious as to your "stake" with Rabbit Gulch?

Banker, How are ya? Hope all is well!

Why is it almost all of the projects are happening in the southern region? It seems the Northern is in the worst shape as far as deer numbers. The NE is not all that great either. Shouldn't the MDF be trying to improve these areas? I guess that is what your talking about when you say to think up a project. It just seems odd to me that the public would have to think up a project to help deer up north. I will have to look at their website and get some ideas. Have a great day!

Chad

Guys that visit this site are mostly big buck fanatics. Unfortunately we are fighting an uphill battle. We are a minority group. Most guys in the state could care less about big bucks they are just happy to whack a 2 point. And so the battle rages on.

And yes you're right about 2 points. I've been know to whack a few myself, but no more! From here on out I'm 2 point FREE!:)

(Unless we need a jerky buck);)

Prism my stake with rabbit gulch was solely to improve the winter range for the red creek and currant creek deer herds. This winter range area is vital to their survival. It is one of the primary reasons why the division issued a couple thousand antlerless tags over the years. Asd far as project location it is located near starvation reservoir in the NorthEast region.

Chad,

Things going pretty good around here.

There are a lot of projects going on in the Southern part of the state because of the drought issues over the past few years and I would guess that someone has pushed for that to happen.

There has and is an ongoing project at a place called Tin Cup Meadows. It is located near Bear Lake, west side of the Hwy. It has been going on for 4 years plus. It was actually approved by the DWR as a Sage Grouse Restoration Project. However, the mule deer have benefited from the improvements made.

This brings up a good point. Just because the project may not be identified as a Mule Deer Project, the benefit of the project does help the Mule Deer and other wildlife.

There is a project going on near Hardware Ranch, the MDF is involved with that.

I know that the MDF is looking at a few other things also. The MDF has been involved with the Rabbit Gulch tree thinning.

If anyone wants to find out what is going on around the State with projects call the DWR or BLM. You will see they have a lot of work to get done.

Again, GET INVOLVED!!! Everyone should do their own homework. Don't rely on MM to do it for you.

Jeremy,

I've spent some time in the area out there looking for coyotes and kitty cats. Sure seems like there's getting to be a lot of roads and pads out in that country.

Again, my thanks for doing something.

The DWR's doe slaughter tags out there were a joke in my opinion, but that could (and has been) be a whole other thread:)

Good luck on your hunts!
