new mexico deer tags?

Does any one know what units in New Mexico typically have leftover deer tags? Just looking for something closer to the panhandle of texas for archery season.

Units 31 and possibly 32 should have plenty of leftover tags on the eastern side of the state.

There should be NO leftover tags this year. The G&F implemented a 4th choice for deer, just as in elk. Those who checked the 4th choice and drew it are willing to accept any deer hunt in a given region of the state. Now deer will be much like elk in that there will be no over the counter tags.

You can buy a private land deer tag and hunt only on privately owned properties with written permission. At this point in time it may be your only option.

If there are any leftover tags they would be for the second rifle hunt. I got one last year and had the worst hunt as far as seeing deer of my life. I have been on several hunts that I have not taken a deer but that was because of choice. Last year it was because we didn't see any legal bucks. There were just too many hunts before ours between ml deer and all the elk hunts. But we still had a good time and saw lots of other game like elk and bighorn sheep. By the way we were in unit 23.

If you look at page 20 of the 2006-07 rules and information booklet the process is explained quite thoroughly. The 4th choice deer hunts were implemented to eliminate much of the need for leftover tags. It was modeled after the elk draw system.
THE 4TH CHOICE IS BRAND NEW FOR 2006-07.

If you do not draw, I would not count on being able to pick up a tag later.
