i went points only this year. what kind of late season rifle hunt could i expect with 3 points in colorado? i prpbably wont cash in for a few more , just wondering.

YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO IT WITH 3-4 POINTS, BUT 5 HAS DONE IT FOR ME EVERY TIME. OR TRY THE EQUEVLENT VOUCHER TAG FOR THE EXTRA $$$$$...... AND FOR GO THE 1-5 YEAR WAIT. YD.

I THINK YOUR TRYING TO BULLSHIP ME, SORRY IF YOUR NOT. LAND OWNER VOUCHER TAGS, PRIVATE OR UNIT WIDE ARE ADVERTISED ALL OVER THIS BOARD, ON POSTS, AND UNDER HUNTS & TAGS.... LOOK AROUND. YD.

i dont remember seeing them called equevelent vouchers ive heard of the other names, thought was about to learn of a new kind of tag. thanks . ill wait a few years for the points like you said. so how much better is a 6-7 point unit? thats along time to wait. i figure ill just get ready to cash my points in and they will have a huge winter kill.

Assuming that you are a nonresident, the points required for a deer tag just went up, in some units drastically. Max tags for normal units will be 35% and for trophy units (takes 5 or more points for residents) is 20%. So nonresident tags for a trophy unit were cut in 1/2 this year compared to last year (40% last year). No one knows for sure how that will affect points needed except to say that they will definately go up for nonresidents.

Here is one example: Statewide archery bull elk tags. Before the change tags could be drawn consistently every other year with 1 point. Now, 2/3 of all resident applicants draw (0 to 1 point required) and this year it will take at least 2 points for nonresidents to draw. In the next few years it will take 3-4 points for a nonresident, assuming all present hunters keep applying.

Bottom line is that until the dust settles on the changes, no one can tell you how many points it will take to draw a certain unit. For a rough guess, I figure that for normal units you can add at least one point. For trophy units, figure it taking 2-4 more years than the current odds tables say.

East of I-25 'late' hunts are the 1st 2 weeks of december.
West of I-25 'late' hunts would be 3rd or 4th rifle (early november to mid november). What are you interested in? What kind of buck are you looking for?
As suggested above there is good units that can be had with 2 or 3 points. Just do some research.

There is no substantial correlation between # of preference points and quality of bucks other than really limited areas will have a higher percentage of mature bucks. There is an assumed higher degree of quality but much of it is hype that is associated with the marketing of landowner vouchers.

For every successful landowner voucher hunter with an oversize buck is a number of hunters who have headed home with expectations unfullfilled.

Big bucks are where you find them and every unit on the West slope has them. Of the three largest bucks taken in Colorado last year, all 260-270 class non-typicals, only one was taken in a high-profile, high point draw area and that was Jed Lowe's archery buck.

I've taken just as big of bucks in second choice draw areas as first choice areas. These are nice big 190"-plus gross type bucks but not what I consider true monsters. Plus. I did it legally and in the season in which I had a tag. The key is knowing the area you are hunting and the rest is just hard effort and lots of luck.

it sounds to me i might want to cash in the points next year. what i would like to find is a unit with minimal human pressure , reasonable chance at a 180 class buck. i like to hunt open rocky country but that might be too picky. i grew up in southern oregon so im not against hunting brushy areas either. i better start some serious reserch then for next season.
