I posted this on the public forum also for those wienies that want hide behind (guest)...

I have always been a big believer that every kid that turns 18 does a two year stint in the armed forces..How could this be a bad thing???. We have so many young people floundering in gangs ,unemployed ,coming from fatherless homes..Wouldn't this be good for Americas youth in the long run???. After all, It would provide an education, discipline, income, responsibility, and a sence of accomplishment and restore some pride in serving the greatest country in the world not to mention ready some of our young people for the probability of war...What do you all think???. Given the attidute of SOME, not all kids, in that age group, it probably would be a good idea. Kids these days have no respect, not all kids keep in mind lack respect, but there are quite a few that I have seen could use a hardcore D.I. from the United States Marine Corps getting them in shape and teach them what it is all about to be responsible and disciplined. Just my opinion.

The United States did not become the greatest military force in the world by forcing people to serve. Morale and esprit de corps is a huge factor in this. It takes pride, dedication and self motivation. I personally think that would lack if persons were forced to be there.

King,

I think the idea is a great, but I have to agree with idahobuck. I think the military would founder with all liberal, weenie attitudes that we have out there if we forced or made it mandatory for everyone to serve a two year stint. Look at the end of Vietnam for example. More than half the kids their at the end of the war were drafted and didn't even want to be there. They ended up sitting around and smoking dope and doing our military no good. Right now my wife's cousin is sitting in the Phillipines. He is in the 1st Special Forces Group out of Fort Lewis and let me tell you the word he is sending back to his wife is that the 1st SFG is not a happy group. They are pissed because they are sitting over there and they are missing all the action taking place in Iraq. I guess they had to have there officers tell them to calm down. You could say that they have some morale and esprit de corps in that group.

I cannot see how serving a mandatory time in the military could be a bad thing. I for one am sick and tired of the lazy, me,me,me attitudes that a lot of "Americans" have nowdays. So be it if half of the kids drafted dont want to be there. Its because of men and women that stood up to what needed to be done and fought to make this country a place that give young people the freedom to ##### about how tough their life is here. Im sure that no one that is fighting right now in Iraq "wants" to be there. Given the choice, Im sure being home with their loved ones would be the ideal. My father and uncle served three years together in Korea and both received Silver and Bronze Stars. I have heard them talk and seen them cry about the ugliness that war is, but above all I have seen the pride in their eyes that they did what was asked of them by their country and they served it well. A couple years ago one of my moms co-workers stopped by their house to visit and saw my dads medals hanging on the wall. He had no idea that my father had them and he stood up and said he wanted to shake his hand and thank him for what he did. That man had spent three years in a POW camp in Vietnam.
Im not trying to chew anyones arse here, but it gives me blood pressure to no end to hear how tough it is here in the U.S. by people that have no idea what "tough" is. I say, if its that damn bad here then its time to go live somewhere else for awhile. We cant forget that the rights and freedom that we enjoy were not given by accident. They were paid for by the blood and sweat of men and women that gave their lives as payment for our rights. Is two years of their lives really that much to ask compared to the price that thousands before them have paid??
That day my dad stood up and shook his hand with pride and tears in his eyes, and he thanked him as well.
