My brother has invited me to Utah for the spike elk season. My brother doesn't hunt but he has done a lot of camping and hiking around the Logan area. I have been to Colorado several times on elk hunts but this will be my first Utah trip. Will hunting here be any different than in Colorado? This trip is really more about spending time with my brother but I hunt as hard as I can any time I go hunting. I will be coming from Oklahoma and I know it is a long way for a spike hunt but I like to hunt new places. What is the elk herd like in the Logan area and are there wilderness areas that hold any game? Thank you for any help .

Welcome to mm I see you have one post. Since your new here I will give ya heads up about the elk in the Cache Unit. They all have Herpes Simplex 1 !! Turns out they contracted it from sheep in the Basin.

I've hunted that area my whole life. There are alot of elk but it can be extremely tough to find a spike. Most of cache valley has roads through most of the area which creates A LOT of road hunters but there are some areas that you can get away from the crowds. These areas are in the more northern areas up around the Idaho border. Those spikes get POUNDED there with all the hunters but it is beautiful country and just fun to be there. If you go there without big expectations and just to be with your brother, you will have a blast. Good luck!

I have a new 358 win. I really want to bring on this hunt. Do you guys think I wii be shorting myself some shot distance?

Ill I know is you better bring lots of amunition to shoot and defend your kill.

when defending your kill id stay a short distance away until the shooting stops "which could last into the night. You don't want to be standing anywhere near the carcass because tards will still open fire if they can see horns.

Spike season is the closest thing to what I have imagined War to be like...and I live in Logan. I was up there last year and saw 100 hunters in one evening, one of them that I talked to told he that he got a spike and that someone shot one out from under his brother the night before from 600 yards away or something like that.

But hunting spikes is a blast and you will get one if you get into the thick trees away from the crowd. Good luck.

So, do most guys just ride the roads? If this is the case, can a guy even get away from crowds if are there roads everywhere? I cant imagine it being more crowded than Colorado otc units. Most people in those units don't get out of sight of their 4 wheeler and then quit hunting after the first day because they don't see any elk. Do the spike units get less crowded after opening weekend and do the elk settle into thick timber or do they run to private ground and stay there?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-30-10 AT 09:51AM (MST)[p]If you can try and hunt during the middle of the week after the opener, there will be a lot less people around. Spikes are hard to find on the unit, we see more mature bulls than spikes so we spend most our time trying to call them in and seeing how close we can get to them. If you come out planning on having a good time with family and want to see some beautiful mountains you won't have to hard of time there. Best of luck.

There are areas on the east side of logan canyon that don't have many roads and some wilderness area. If you want to hunt there be prepared to hike or have horses. It is big country there and there are a lot of hunters with horses in that area.

I grew up in Utah and now live in CO. I now do the OTC elk hunts in CO and feels like I'm in heaven with the amount of hunters there are. In Utah there is 2 orange jackets on the top of every ridge. If you don't like the crowds in CO you will HATE Utah.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-30-10 AT 10:22AM (MST)[p]95% of Utah hunters will be within a half mile of any road or never get off their wheeler/truck. This sounds great right?

Wrong! If you do happen to locate a canyon that is away from the road you cant automatically assume you are alone because some of those roads will allow a tard easy access to a ridge and they will be packing .338 magnums with 225 grain bullets which can easily reach your spike at over a mile, and they will try and prove it.

My suggestion is "STAY LOW" the shooting will only last a day or so. with Obama's economy the shooting might actually be shortened this year due price of those .338 bullets.

If you do happen to be successful you will be filled with a great sense of pride knowing you have shot someones future six point bull and extended their once in a life time tag to never.
LOL

I'm just giving you a hard time. If you spend a week or so I don't know how you could go home without a spike you would be glad to grow your tomatoes on.

Horses or mules will help ya get into those places easier and help with the pack out too. You should look at that option if you can. If I was hunting that place that would be the first thing on my list is finding some-one with horses to take me in.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

make sure & smear mud all over them 'oakie' license plates
