Hello all

Dad drew a muley rifle bookcliffs tag this year! We're excited to get up do some scouting.

Those of you that have drawn previous years...any advice on where to start looking? I've heard that weather and migration plays a role in success there.

If you drew, did the hunt fall above or below your expectations?

Should we book a guide? I'm not much for guides but don't want to waste a good tag.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You wont have a problem finding deer it just depends on how big a buck you want.

I hunted the rifle tag 2 years ago and it was real good but that was that year with the early snow. I killed a 32 inch typical buck that grossed 197. I'm not real big on guides either but since I'm from Arizona I didn't have time to scout. (435-722-2225) I hired Shawn Labrum who owns Wild Mountain Guide Service to take me out a couple of days before the season and show me some spots.(435-722-2225) Garth Carter recommended him and he is a full time outfitter. He definately put us in a good spot. Good info and guides are not real cheap but you get what you pay for. It was money well spent and me and my brother still got to hunt by ourselves. I shot my buck on a migration trail but I think Shawn said they were still up high on the muzzleloader hunt. Shawn also showed us video of big bucks that he filmed that summer and fall which was real helpful in knowing what to pass. The hardest part on my hunt was knowing what to pass up. There were a quite a few hunters on the rifle hunt but most shot small 4 points or less during the first couple of days and headed out. After 3 or so days there weren't many hunters left. Give me a private message if you want. Good luck.

From what I've heard, we're going to have to work on our field judging skills.

Thanks for your help yearin1. Check your private messages. I subscribe to Carters services also...and will hopefully get some more info from members that have drawn the tag previously.

I'll have to give shawn a call. I like the idea of getting a good head start, but not having a guide behind you every second telling you where to turn.

Anybody else out there that has hunted this unit before?

Was there hunting last fall. I would take a quad. I didn't. If I had the money I would hire a guide but you don't need one.

My dad and my uncle shot these 2 bucks from the books in 2004. They hunted the riffle hunt the last week of the season. The guy in the post before said it right that Shawn is the guy to talk to. They did it on there own and I think you will be able to do the same. Dont shoot the 180s if you look hard you will find one that will break 190s or better.

You guys are making me drool!

I'm getting excited and will follow your advice.

Dallanc and Yearin1,

Check your private messages, I think I left you messages if I did it right.

Thanks

These are some deer that my dad and I shot in 2005. I also hunted there in 2002 and ended up with something similar. Send me a pm and Ill be happy to fill you in on anything I can. Good luck!
