I drew a third season deer tag for 4, just out of Craig. I was curious if anybody had any feedback about the unit, good or bad? Thanks - Brian

My partner and i also drew 3rd season for unit 4. We are from Oregon, will not be able to scout, but will hunt the entire 7 day season.

I hope to draw a decent Oregon bull tag, so am trying to decide if I want to spend another $ 500.00 on the over-the-counter elk tag.

We think we have a pretty good plan for bucks. Any feedback on the value of the elk tag would be appreciated.

Thanks

I also drew unit 4 third season (as a second choice) now the work begins. Seems from the info that I have been getting, snow is a probability and the deer will have moved lower. I think I will buy an elk tag , because I know if I don't I will see a nice bull at 50 yards.

Hunted 4 last year 3rd season for elk...

Routt will be about as crowded as your local shopping mall, and unfortunately there is nowhere in the forest that is not within ~ a mile of a road so it is difficult to get away from the pressure.

The forest access off of rd 38 was less crowded than the southern accesses.

Surprisingly we saw more deer up in the sage hills north and slightly west of the forest. There is a huge chunk of huntable land with rolling sage covered hills, and several water holes throughout the area. The state land is huntable but OHV's are not allowed.

Depending on the weather I would try these 2 area if I was hunting there again this year.

If the weather is in your favor and there is a lot of snow then a OTC elk tag might be worth the investment. That tag would open up units 3/301 to you which are right across hwy 13 and this is a main migration rout.

You might also talk to the Craig Chamber of Commerce, they have a full time hunting/fishing laison who was real helpful for us last year.

Good Luck

RudeDog:

Thanks for the info. It was very helpful. I will follow up with the Craig Chamber of Commerce.

Rude is right about the sage flats you will see and glass more deer and elk out that way then you will higher up. Try and get in a day or two ahead of the season so you can scout both then pick a place and then glass it hard and hunt it harder.

Is the land just north of craig and hayden BLM? I can't tell on my gazeter map? I can see the NF boundry a little bit more north, just curious about the land in between the NF and craig/hayden. Brian

Brian...

...there are small pockets of BLM land between the forest and Craig/Hayden but not much. We found a lot of the public land in that area was almost impossible to access without crossing onto private land.

Again Ned at the Chamber can help with what is and what is not actually accessible. I would make the Chamber your first stop when you arrive and take a look at the maps he has posted.
