Just wondering how many points it takes to draw into a good elk archery hunt unit in Wyoming? Also a rifle mule deer hunt also? Building up some points and don't have a clue how many it will take! Thanks for any information!

Hard to answer your question since "point creep" is not fully known since not all "max pool" point holders have drawn out yet.

If you are in max point pool and are not holding out for a top unit then you should draw rifle deer and archery elk in next 5 years in all but the top 2 or 3 units.

I have max deer points as non-resident yet I think I had under 5% odds to draw for the rifle unit I put in for this year. That is 1 in 20 odds in the point pool portion of the tag draw and way less odds in the random pool portion.

I assume will take up to 7 more years to draw this deer unit as the max folks like me all draw out but then I will go to the back of the line and may take another 20 years to draw the same unit since am behind everyone now. Such is point creep on better units.

My strategy is to hold out for a great deer unit then do as I did for WY elk and deer after got a great unit under the point system...switch to a decent unit so can draw in 5 years or less.

If you have units in mind then you can go to WY F&G to look up draw history to see points needed. If you do not have units in mind then will be tougher. You can search around a bit here or online to get an idea of hunts that are what you are looking for in a hunt since may vary from the next hunter (scenery, trophy animals, few hunters, sleep in hotel and eat in diner each night, sleep in wall tents eating over firepit, see lots of average animals, gentle terrain with lots of roads, wilderness, guided, do it yourself, public land, pay for private land access, etc).
