Colorado Unit 551 4th Season

Can anyone give me some advice on CO unit 551? I drew a 4th season tag. Had been applying for unit 21 for years but with the nonresident changes & Garth Carter I got out of that game quick. I had virtually no time to research what to do so I elected to pick one of the new late season hunts. Thought there would be no way I'd draw. I was wrong. Thanks.

I had 10 points. CODOW website says I point banked zero, so it took either 9 or 10 points. Carter had this hunt ranked #9 on his chart. I expect most high point holders applied for 54 & 55 4th. I knew I'd have no chance there, but wanted to burn my points while the overall deer herd is good. Didn't want to be screwed by a hard winter.

I drew an early rifle bull tag for 55/551. I normally hunt 55 but I'm considering 551 this year. I'll be doing some scouting/fishing in 551 this summer. It's the smallest unit in the Gunnison Basin and I don't think there are as many roads, which is a good thing. You should should see a lot of bucks. I had 3 points and didn't draw a 3rd season tag in 55.

I drew 55 3rd season rifle with 4 points looks like. I had 8 and now I have 4 banked so it probably took 3 + 1. I was surprised it was that low.

Ooops... make that 5 points it took. 4 + 1. I had 9 and now I have 4 left. My mistake. Just wanted to make it right.

4th season, your golden! your biggest problem will likely be shoot the 190 typical or the 200 with trash! i have my work cut out for me with the second season tag. tb

Orion,

Haha. Well it won't be hard to beat my current 130" buck, but I don't know about 190"! I wouldn't even know how to field judge anything over 170". It's only my 3rd mulie hunt and I wish I had a bit more experience. However, I plan on getting there 3-4 days early to scout, and hopefully see some big bucks to get used to. I will hold out best I can.

my advice to you would be between now and then go to as many sporting good stores, outdoor shows whatever and study all those big buck head mounts and get use to looking at them. mentally score them and see how close you are. Eastman has a good book you might buy, "hunting the high country" and there is a section in there about scoring mule deer. good book in my opinion. your hunt is too good of a hunt to shoot an average buck, put in the time and you'll get a good one. ill be looking forward to seeing what you get. if you get any good tips on 551 throw them my way would you, and ill do the same. my email is [email protected] if you are interested. good luck to you. travis.
