What do you think works the best/like for hunting cows in the first part of Aug with a bow. I know First hand that those girls are hard to hunt!

hunt for a bull and the cow will always stand in the way.

That the honest truth, if you are hunting a bull the cows will be right there in front every time.

No doubt about it, a good waterhole and treestand are the trick for killing cows/spikes on the early archery hunt.

get on a 4 wheeler, ride with your ow in hand, an arrow knocked of course, and ride the hills really fast. A ig fat cow i bound to cross your path... thats how i hunt them....Maybe thats the reason i've never killed an elk??? probably not though...

I had luck over water a couple years ago. Saw the cows coming down a ridge to water and made my way down to the spring, got comphy in some tall sage for about 15 mins and she was there. The only hard part was moving her out of the 2 track road she tipped over in to clean her out. I know around the ely area they are getting pretty hard to smoke now-a-days.

I have had good luck simply cow calling in early August.

Elk are curious animals.

If you try to sound like a small group of elk and call sporadically in an area where you know elk are then sooner or later one will pop their head in just to see what all the fuss is about.

Elk like to herd together and this time of year you can drag stragglers in pretty easily.

Even had some spikes and branch antlered satellite bulls come in and take a look.

I have shot 2 elk using this method over the past 4 years (a cow and a slike).

We hunt em' over water. Works quite well for us year after year.
Treestands, 15 - 30 yard shots.

You hold really still cause if you move your busted and they will make quite a ruckuzz getting out of there. Cool experience though.
