11 year old son draw his first big game elk tag. Need a little direction in unit 34 hunt starts Oct.2-6. Have a little info around Weed Nm.
Thanks
John

That is the area where I would take my son if he had a tag. Elk should still be bugeling pretty well that time of year and locating bulls shouldn't be too dificult. Good Luck to you and your son. Be sure come back and post pics and tell us how it went.

This sounds open ended, but I really don't think you will have any problem what-so-ever. The odds are high that they will still be wound up and bugling during your hunt.

Congrats to your son on drawing a great tag. I took my son last year and had a blast. He killed a spike on the last day, but passed on a small branch antlered bull opening morning, and two more spikes during the hunt. We were into bulls everyday and they were bugling the whole week. Nothing better than getting to take your son on a elk hunt when the bulls are bugling. Good luck!

holy smokes,,this is probably (in my opinion). the best youth hunt in the state. My son got very lucky and drew 2 years in a row.Absolutely incredible,,,,bulls screaning the whole hunt.First hunt was 16 minutes long second hunt was 4 hours long.87 yards and 32 yards,,,,the memories are one you will never forget or better yet,,,the youngster.Good luck and dont shoot the first one you see.

Hey Goatrunner,

We'll be up there also. I've hunted the unit for general rifle bull and late season antlerless, and see elk everywhere year round. Good luck to you.

I'll be up there with a friend and his son who drew the first year he applied.

Unit 34 from three years ago..... ;) My son's first elk! Drove all the way from Phoenix for an amazing (and quick) hunt!! :)

That's a beautiful trophy, Stanley. Thanks for sharing the picture. I'd love to even see his little brother this year. It's been about 6 years since I've hunted elk up there.

Thanks sandhillhunter! So you know, my son definitely would have shot ANY sized bull! It just so happened that this nice one was in the first bunch we got into.... I'm thinking your junior hunter will have a fair chance at seeing a bull! ;) I'm also assuming that it's still an 'ES' tag this year? ;)

Our hunt was 100% DIY. We had never set foot in the unit prior to the evening before the opener. With some help from 'friends' and contacts, we were able to narrow our area down and were in the elk from the minute we set camp up.

Nothing like a DIY hunt on public ground!!
