muleys or whitetail in montana

I drew a big game combo for Montana and,,, well my back-up plans seem to have already, or are in the process of falling through, so I thought I would ask for some help with deer. I have the elk covered. But it seems that the deer end is a bit more difficult. So, I have a couple of questions, generally speaking would it be best to make muleys or whitetail my priority? What area of the state would be best to begin - all I am looking for is a general region? What time of year would be best? And is the block management program worth pursuing? Thanks for any help offered.

The Block management program is a good deal. It takes a little work but can be worth it. Depending on what region you hunt in there can be a lot of land availiable.

Where are you going to elk hunt? That would be helpful in pointing you in the right direction. I second the Block Management idea. Do your research and get the BM maps for where you plan to hunt. mtmuley

I am actually very flexible and plan to hunt elk near Missoula, but afterwards I can go anywhere in the state for deer and prefer to do so, unless someone suggests the Missoula area for deer as well. Thanks for the help.

I think the deer depends on what you are after. You will generally find more deer on the plains of eastern montana (muleys), but if you want to get a monster, that is probably not going to happen there. Being an eastern montana native, I always head east, but I know there are opportunities elsewhere. I enjoy seeing more deer and bucks, so I give up any realistic chance at a monster to hunt some of the public breaks land. If you are interested in more, send me a PM.
