Oregon's Owyhee

Would like to talk to someone familiar with Oregon's Owyhee River country as far as muleys are concerned. I put in knowing it's not a trophy unit but have always wanted to hunt that country- be it the ID side or the OR side. Of the two, the Oregon tag came before Idaho. My questions relate to private vs. public, access, terrain, etc. Can pm if desired.
Thanks, Blixen

I have hunted Owyhee in Oregon several time over the past 18 years. My biggest buck there was a 28 1/2", 5x4 stag in 1995. If it is hot the deer are really hard to find. Most of my hunting there was to the east of Lake Owyhee. If you want more info send me a PM.

Its a fine unit, and there are some really good bucks in there, few yrs ago my buddy killed a 210 class buck, but you have to do your homework and scout. Units like owhyee, beulah etc are way better then anyone gives them credit for, mostly because what happens is a bunch of I-5 corridor people, just jump in the pickup and camper and come over the day before opener then run out some 2 track and don't see any deer, going home saying it sucks.

I'ts been a few years since I've been there but the deer numbers are WAY down. some friends who have hunted the unit for years said last year was even worse and they think the cats are the main problem. in fact someone was getting hunters to sign a petition to try to get ODFW to do something about the cats and had no problem getting signatures, I'm sure it was a waste of time . don't worry about private land there's an oh my god amount of BLM to hunt. there's still a few nice bucks in there and if you hang around until the second weekend chuckar season opens so take your shotgun, there's lots of birds.

Good points you guys.
It is true that the lions are doing their share of damage and the numbers are down, but like most western states the roadhunters run off the easy kills and then claim no game to be found. Last year we saw some whoppers, but couldn't get close enough for the bow kill...
Owyhee is desolate and does sport some fine bucks if you get off the roads on foot and glass...

I agree there are some big bucks in the desert. I been there on the Idaho side, put in for again this year, no luck, again. The hotter it is the better it is, they have to come to water, & they leave tracks. And if you can track, it will be exciting. But then again I can't draw. Mike

I thing the Idaho side is a little different then the oregon side. Idaho manages it a little different and the hunts are also a lot later to accomidate the rut. A lot less tags also. Great idea about tracking will work good in both areas if you know what your doing.
